Pencil Line tool keeps changing thickness when i erase

Im in a situation where i have a characters tongue that needs to overlay outside of a mask. i duplicate the tongue art and then try to erase the part i dont need, to create my overlay, but any time i try and remove any part of the tongue the line quality changes compared to the origional tongue art so the overlay no longer matches. what can i do to remedy this?
