Selection tool selects everything

Hey there!

Say I have 2 circles that overlap with each other and I want to select the overlapping area by using the selection tool, it should be easy, but for some reason my selection tool selects both circles as if they were one and I can't seem to do anything

    if object drawing was used when creating, use modify>combine objects>intersect

     

    p.s. you might want to copy your objects if you don't want to lose the non-intersecting parts
