Symbol dissapears after deleting old one?

I'm making changes to a symbol by adding layers and shading, but once I delete the original symbol from my library, that part of the new symbol disappears. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I'm new to this software. I've looked everywhere and can't find an answer for this.
