Transforming non-regular drawing outlines into lines

Hi, I would like to know how to take precise contours with non-regular curves on a basic drawing and turn them into lines. As shown in the photo below. Then how do I highlight the interior?

    If the drawing is vector, you can duplicate it, break apart and then only leave the silhouette of what you need. Apply the desired stroke and fill (with alpha, so that it is semi-transparent).

     

    If the original drawing is raster, trace the contour on a new layer by hand, using the Line or the Pen tool.
