Turning PNG into symbols?

I am using PNG's.

Since I need to swap some images should I turn them into symbols?

Can you swap PNG images?

Swap works with PNG, no need to make them be a symbol. Select the bitmap that is on the stage and click the Swap button (which is a right arrow over a left arrow icon these days), then choose the replacement from the list you are shown.
