Initial Feedback (and a request) on Delete Silence in Multitrack

The newest release brought a feature I've been requesting/waiting years for. I edit a fair number of podcasts and having effective strip silence is a key part of my workflow that would either force me to other DAWs, or would always be missed whenever editing in Audition.

So, first:

 

Second, the feedback:

  • Finding it: It took a few minutes to find, but was able to track it down in the Diagnostics panel. The settings are straightforward and made sense (a bit more to come on that in a second).
  • No crashes, works well: I ran it on a few different show recordings and it worked well. No crashes and the silence was properly detected and stripped based on the various settings.
  • One things to add: So far, the only thing I'm missing/have a suggestion on is that it could use some attack/release time settings. Right now it has signal settings for cutting/keeping items below/above certain dB thresholds. Seems to work well, but the cuts can become a bit more clipped at the edges than I'd like. A sound (voices in my case) could use a bit more feathering at the very beginning/end of the sound - adding some attack/release time settings to keep any additional audio in front of/behind the already kept audio would help a ton and make this feature perfect (for my uses, at least).

 

Overall, though - THANK YOU! This is the (very important) icing feature on the cake of a product that I very much enjoy using.

    I LOVE LOVE LOVE this feature THANK YOU SO MUCH - it's such a gamechanger for my workflow and will literally save me so many hours a week. It's worked well for me so far. The one thing I would personally love is a more automated AI driven way to dial in the "define silence as/define audio as" levels. I tried the Trim Long Silent Pauses preset which gave me these settings (silence = -74db for more then 1000ms and audio = -63db for more then 50ms).  This didn't find anything on my clip but by playing with it - I found it worked exactly to what I wanted (only delete long pauses, not thinking pauses in the middle of sentences) by setting it for this audio clip to (silence = -58db for more then 1000ms and audio = -56db for more then 300ms). Would love some automated Sensai magic here to figure this out for me automatically on a per track basis. The find levels button is not really there yet as when I did it on the clip, it gave me (silence = -49db for more then 1000ms and audio = -35db for more then 50ms ) which removed way to many short pauses in the middle of a sentence which is not what I personally want. But again this is a great great start - and am so happy about this feature.

      Agree with this sentiment. I'm also a podcaster, and can already tell this will save me loads of time. Agree about the attack and release settings. When I edit, I might sometimes want a more natural entrance into the clip (e.g., the guest inhaling) but I don't want to include that dB level as "audio" throughout the whole clip. Otherwise, this is a great add and I'm excited to keep using it!
