ACR files no longer open to Photoshop using Open Object button in ACR 18.6.0.2698

After updated my Mac OS versions of Photoshop and ACR this past week I have encountered a problem when attempting to open edited ACR files in Photoshop using the “Open Object” button. (Same issue if I choose “Open” instead of “Open Object” in ACR.

The problem only affects files that have been edited in ACR. An unedited file will open correctly in Photoshop.

When I click the button, ACR simply closes and takes me back to Bridge. My ACR edits are not lost, but I still cannot open the file. Double-clicking the image in Bridge re-opens in in ACR with the previous ACR edits intact, but clicking the Open Object button still will not open in into Photoshop.

If I instead go back to Bridge, click to select the image in the slideshow, it opens a camera raw edit window like the one that I had seen in ACR, though with a different layout form my default ACR layout. If I click DONE or Open Object, the window simply closes and I’m in Photoshop by my file has not opened.

Photoshop version is 27.10.0
Bridge Version is 16.0.6.9
Mac OS version is 26.6.2
Apple M4 Pro Mini with plenty of memory

I tried deleting Camera Raw Preferences from Photoshop, but to no avail.

This all worked correctly until the most recent Adobe updates.

I have used ACR for as long as I can remember, and never encountered this issue until this week. What on earth is the problem? All I am trying is to open a photo in Photoshop, and I can’t do it. My process, for eternity, has been to open in ACR, do quick edits, and then, from ACR, open in Photoshop and complete edits. I can’t do this anymore. How is it we pay ridiculous amounts for this, but a most basic core feature like this disappears, yet we pay more for this garbage? What is the fix?

This has been an issue for some considerable time, well over a year. It happens when Camera Raw is hosted by Bridge rather than by Photoshop. The Camera Raw plugin itself is shared between these applications. If you open a raw file from within Photoshop it will open in Camera Raw hosted by Photoshop and then all works correctly.

The solution? Short of a reinstall of Bridge and Photoshop I have seen nothing reported as a quick solution. If you uninstall Bridge and Photoshop, remember to reinstall Bridge first.

I’m not sure what was going on here, but I’m developing a sneaking suspicion that my computer was getting confused between the versions. of Adobe apps installed on my internal SSD system volume and backup versions stored on external volumes — backups created by the SuperDuper! app. How that occurred is a mystery.

My first hint was that when I used the menu option to open from ACR in Photoshop, three iterations of Photoshop showed up! One was my current version installed on the SSD and the other two were a previous version. I am now suspicious that at some point in all of this one of those earlier iterations started getting called up/launched instead of the correct, most current version.

By ensuring that this is now the case (long story) it looks like it is now working correctly.
