Better gamma response and IQ in ACR/LR after windows reinstall
So this is a weird one and over the years it has been a headscratcher. But it seems consistent. My renderering in LR/ACR becomes worse after a period of time. Since it seems to happen gradually and subtle I am not sure what is causing this.
To describe what I am seeing is a bit difficult but overall this:
1) Incorrect gamma response: Adjusting the exposure sliders don't give me the right look. Lowering the exposure just makes the image dull and dim. Midtones seem to ...fade and die. Adjusting highlights easily becomes lost highlights (or with very bad rolloffs). Basically the overall shadow-midtone-highlight balance is off.
2) Lack of detail in the previews. They are not blurry in any way and at first glance it seems normal. But that extra crisp rendering is not there. Ususally I don't see this until I have reinstalled everything including windows (as I will describe further below).
This forces me to go heavy on the contrast slider/curves and clarity since my images seem to lack deep pop. Something I notice when I revisit my edits after a fresh windows reinstall.
Now...I know exactly what you are thinking. Bad monitor profile/calibration or cache/LR catalog corruption with messed up previews. But this is not the case. I recalibrate my Eizo on a regular basis (usually every other week) and I clean the cache in LR and also optimize the catalog from time to time. But the result is the same. There is a subtle but very "meh" feeling of the image quality...Until....
Wipe everything. Clean the drive and reinstall windows. And then install creative cloud from scratch. Boom! The IQ is back and it is a massive difference. Gamma is where it should be with deep blacks without getting crushed, shiny highlights with detail and crispy sharpness with loads of detail. Suddenly editing becomes a breeze and it usually only takes a few moments to get the edits where I want them. As it should be.
What the hell is this? Why! Apart from the monitor profile created after calibration and the GPU drivers from NVIDIA - are there other drivers in my windows system that could have an impact on RAW rendering, previews and gamma? Something I can reinstall/fix without going through the pain of reinstalling windows?
Occasionally I have tried to reinstall my NVIDIA drivers but that has not helped either so..
The only thing I know is that my LR always renders less optimal after a while and the only solution is a reinstall of everything. Bloody 'el....
Any ideas? Also, I would like to add that colors are usually okay(-ish) with no color cast. Maaaaybe lacking a bit of punch and the right tone due to not getting proper gamma/contrast but overall I would say they are OK so there is nothing alarming about that. Which makes it even weirder.
