Brush masks behaving really strangely - help needed

Let me preface this with saying that I am an idiot and probably doing something very basic very wrong, BUT - everything seems to have changed since I updated my MacOS to Sonoma 14.6.1.

Masks - I select Brush, I expect a big circle, which changes the bits of the image I brush, according to how I adjust the settings.

Now - when I select a new mask, I start to brush, it darkens the whole image, and then appears to even lighten it in bits, and whatever adjustments I make don't appear.
Also - when I select a new mask/brush .... nothing happens.

I think it's K for a new mask, and that I should be able to see the pins and select the masks that I want to work on, but they don't appear - only my bog standard cursor.

Anyone else had similar, or am I just being a dolt?

Correct answer Erik Bloodaxe

Press V to show/hide pins.

Press Y to show/hide the mask overlay.

If you create a mask before you make any adjustments then the mask overlay will show. Perhaps this is what you are seeing as you brush. The overlay color will be as you have it set and can be altered to your taste. Look in mask overlay properties.

Hope this is of some help for you.

Yep - in the end I found using the hack of turning it off and on again resolved the issue.
