Question

Camera Raw causing iMac to to shutdown

2019 iMac

Retina 5K 27 inch

Processor

3.6 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9

Graphics

Radeon Pro Vega 48 8GB

Memory

32GB

macOS

Ventura

Photoshop

v 24.0.1

Camera Raw is causing my iMac to shut down completely. It doesn't give any crash report messages after restarting.

It seems to be a guarantee to repeatedly happen when I'm using brushes to lighten shadows, for example, on the side of someone's face in photographs. It has occurred in the basic adjustments panel, also.

Things I have tried but didn't fix the issue

  • Clean install of Ventura + newest versions of Photoshop/Camera Raw and Bridge
  • Clean install of Monterey + newest versions of Photoshop/Camera Raw and Bridge
  • Clean install of Monterey + version 23.3 Photoshop/Camera Raw and 12.0.3 Bridge

It's currently back to Ventura and the newest versions of Photoshop/Camera Raw and Bridge.

I turned off GPU in camera raw preferences. It seemed to make the issue worse.

I've also tried many other things after reading through Adobe Forums with no improvement.

Please help!

Did you try resetting the ACR preference?

Hold down the Command key and select Photoshop > Preferences > Camera Raw (macOS) or hold down the Ctrl key and select Edit > Preferences > Camera Raw (Windows).

Click Yes in the dialog that asks "Delete the Camera Raw Preferences?"

I took my iMac to an Apple store today to have it extensively tested for hardware issues. No issues were found. I reset the ACR preferences and the issue has not been resolved.

Try logging into another account (you may need to make one), still crashing?

Try starting up in Safe mode (hold down Shift Key when booting), still crashing?

You might want to try running a free utility like Onyx: still crashing?
