Camera Raw Filter Crashes on Second Photo – RAM or GPU Error

Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing (about a week) an issue in Photoshop when working with multiple photos and using the Camera Raw filter.

When I open the first photo, everything works fine — I can apply the Camera Raw filter without any problems. However, when I open a second photo and try to use the Camera Raw filter again, Photoshop stops working properly. I get an error message saying either:

"Not enough RAM"
or

a GPU acceleration-related error.

If I close Photoshop completely and reopen it, I can apply the filter again — but only once. The issue returns as soon as I try it on another image.

Has anyone experienced this before? Could this be related to my system specs? I'm currently considering upgrading to 64 GB of RAM — would that help? Thats advice I received from IT guy .

Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated!

Because this has to do with the GPU, see if it helps to reset the Camera Raw GPU cache. The directions were posted by Adobe in this older post here:

My problem is solved. I didn’t fix it myself, but with help from my IT specialist. He resolved the memory management issues and upgraded my RAM from 32 GB to 64 GB. That solved the problem.

We concluded that the issue started after Adobe released some upgrades. It seems like users on Apple devices don’t experience this, but I’m on Windows. Photoshop has become noticeably heavier, and my PC showed peak RAM usage especially when opening Camera Raw.

How many megapixels are your typical raw images? The reason I ask is that my computer has been on 32GB for many years and has never had an issue like that*. Based on your description of how it went, I’m kind of wondering if the problem was a subtle problem in one of the RAM modules that used to be in your computer. In the past, Adobe engineers have said that Photoshop/Camera Raw place demands on memory that most other software doesn’t, so that for example such a problem might only be exposed by using a more demanding app like Photoshop/Camera Raw. (Do you use any other memory-intensive apps like 3D or visual effects?)

I’m wondering if the problem got fixed not specifically because the computer was upgraded to 64GB, but simply because the RAM modules were replaced. In other words, maybe the problem would also have been fixed by putting in a different set of 32GB modules.

Nothing wrong with a 64GB upgrade…I wouldn’t mind having that much! I’m just questioning if the problem was really about the amount of RAM, because for so many users the point of diminishing returns for a RAM upgrade starts in the 32–48GB range.

Regardless…nice to hear that it’s been fixed!

*Yes, I use a Mac…but it seems like most Camera Raw users on Windows PCs are also doing just fine on 32GB.

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post (like this one has already been moved) if it helps you get responses.
