Camera Raw not remembering default

I've set (numerous times) default settings I want ACR to apply when I import images from Photo Mechanic, mainly to do with white point and sharpening. After I set the sliders to the required levels I then click save default. I would expect ACR to apply the settings to all images that are imported automatically. Am I doing something wrong? I'm using two different camera bodies if this helps?

Also 2 requests for ACR if Adobe are reading this?.

1. Why are the 'tools' right over on the left of the screen? This doesn't make sense at all.

2. I wish the crop tool would allow you to straighten the image using the corners and also have a center grab point like on Lightroom.

Thanks
