.CR3 RAW files from a Canon EOS 5R mk II will not display in MacOS preview if "HDR (PQ)" is enabled

.CR3 RAW files from a Canon EOS 5R mk II will not display in MacOS preview if "HDR (PQ)" is enabled on the camera.

Disabling the "HDR PQ" option and the .CR3 RAW files can be previewed fine.

What is HDR PQ? https://en.canon-cna.com/get-inspired/tips-and-techniques/hdr-pq/

Please fix this. I believe it should be possible to preview .CR3 RAW files even if HDR PQ is enabled.

Not sure if Adobe needs to fix it or Canon or Apple?

I experienced a similar issue with my EOS R5 (Mark I) in macOS Sequoia 15.1. I have reported the problem to Apple who plan to address the issue in a future maintenance update. As you mention, turning off HDR PQ will restore QuickLook thumbnails. You can also generate custom Finder icons either manually or using an Automator script.

In Sequoia 15.1, there is also a associated problem with excessive CPU (at least on Apple silicon) when generating a thumbnail for a CR3 file with HDR PQ enabled. This is likely a bug related to the HEVC encoded preview embedded in the CR3 image when HDR PQ is turned on. For the time being, you can log out and back in to macOS when this occurs or use the Activity Monitor to delete the ImageThumbnailExtension process.

Thanks for your thoughtful reply and confirming the issues I've observed. The high CPU usage also happens on Intel x86.

For now HDR PQ is unusable for me so I will disable it.

You're most welcome. You may want to take a look at the workaround that I recently posted on the Apple Support Community site (see https://discussions.apple.com/thread/255833122?sortBy=newest_first&page=1).
