Crop in Adobe Camera Raw 18.6 has become nightmare

When opening RAW in ACR and using Crop (C) tool from left or right of the image it actually starts moving the GUI rather than cropping the image, not sure what version this has been changed, but before i never had this issue, please make GUI have lock option so when cropping images it would never try to resize GUI

I understand there is way to aim and select the right resize tool but margin for aim is so little and its waste of time, GUI should be set up once for most people don’t need to constantly be able to resize the side bars of ACR GUI

Thanks again for the recordings and detailed examples. I’ve discussed these workflows with the Camera Raw team.

Could you please try the following:

Right-click the background area next to the image > Padding > Medium

This adds more space around the image in Fit View, which should provide better separation from the side-panel divider and more room to work when cropping or rotating.

Please let me know whether this improves the crop-edge/panel-resize issue and the rotation/working-space issue.

Hello i have tried padding - medium and its not a solution for me, setting padding - medium eating out too much space (makes image too small when using fit to screen feature).

i always want to have to image fill as much of screen area as possible when fit to screen.

Should not be difficult to make GUI stay locked probably takes one line of code, i don’t understand why the programmers are pushing back on this trying give this workarounds for something that worked fine few versions back before that feature was added.

Thanks for testing the Medium Padding option and explaining why it doesn’t work for your workflow. I understand that you want to retain Small Padding and the larger Fit view, while avoiding accidental resizing of the side panels when cropping.

I’ve taken that specific feedback back to the Camera Raw team. They’ve noted the request and will consider it.

There’s nothing further you need to test at this point.

I also think this is a big issue and a huge cause of frustration. I do several assignments for a picture agency where time is of the essence, and the new version of CR is a major slowdown compared to before.

In addition to what has already been mentioned, it is unfortunately not possible to rotate the image without cropping quite a bit to be able to rotate a landscape image to the left or right. It was so much easier before, when the picture was slightly reduced in size to make margins all around the image. Some might like this new change, but it makes it so hard for me to make a small vertical adjustment when I don’t want to crop. And if I want to un-crop a bit, I can make the image disappear behind the editing panel or the image selection panel.

Also, when cropping, instead of having the zoom setting staying at, let’s say 100%, it now changes depending on how much you crop, and it does it every single time you make the smallest change. I have to press option + command + 0 every other picture, just because I want to check my focus. Before, when you cropped, the new crop became the standard and it didn’t mess with what I had set the zoom percentage at.

I have done a couple of screen recordings, but I cannot upload them in neither .mov or .mp4 formats. And that is with a very small window recorded and only 10-15s long clips. Can I WeTransfer them over to you, Anshul?

Please, have a look into these issues and at least give us an option to change how the margins and zoom function work. It would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you both for the additional details. @ivan25349743g7a0, your explanation & screen recording clarify the issue well. In Fit view, the image/crop boundary can sit very close to the interface divider, making it too easy to resize the panel instead of grabbing the crop boundary during a fast editing workflow. I’ll pass this along to the Camera Raw team for review.

@Ambrosial_realiste0c5, the additional behaviors you described around zoom changing while cropping and the lack of working space/margins when rotating or extending the crop are also useful. I’d like the team to look at those separately, as they may not have the same underlying cause as the panel-resizing issue.

And yes, please feel free to share the screen recordings via WeTransfer if the Community upload is rejecting the files. You can post the link here, or send it to me privately if you would prefer not to share it publicly.

I tried ACR 14.5 which is the newest version I could download from an official Adobe website. That version has the cropping and rotating functionality that me and many others have become used to with no issues regarding borders or odd zooming behavior.

Thanks for explaining this. I understand the issue you’re describing: when using Crop near the left or right side of the image, the pointer can pick up the ACR panel divider instead of the crop boundary, causing the interface/panel width to resize when you intended to adjust the crop.

I haven’t found an existing issue that exactly matches this Crop-versus-panel-resize interaction, so I’d like to gather a bit more information before we classify it as a regression.

Could you please share:

A short screen recording showing the problem, including the pointer as you approach the left/right crop boundary.

Your operating system and display resolution/scaling.

Whether it happens on both the left and right sides, or primarily on the side adjacent to the ACR editing panel.
Whether it still happens when the image is set to Fit in View, with some space visible between the image/crop boundary and the side panels.

You mentioned that this wasn’t a problem in an earlier version. If you happen to remember the last Camera Raw version where the same workflow was comfortable, that would also be very useful for comparing the interaction.

When i focusing on the issue while recording video its rather easy to spot the cursor change however during workflow when i have to flip hundreds of images in a day i have no time to stop down and think about what icon is being shown - have to quickly crop the image. In middle of workflow i hit 60% of times the interface resize slider which really annoying and counter productive.

Mostly problem comes when image is Fit to screen so border of image is next to border of interface sidebar.

Windows 10
I am using 1920x1200 resolution.
Don’t remember what version was okay, perhaps before you introduced this feature.

There is error when i try to upload mp4 or zip file so i put video here.
