Functionality - Unable to open NEF files from Nikon D850 in Photoshop CS6

I'm using Photoshop CS6 on an iMac. When trying to open NEF files I'll get an error message that asks me to install the latest version of CameraRaw from some adobe website. After I installed CameraRaw 10.5, the installer told me that the installation was sucessful, and yet Photoshop CS6 still fails to open up NEF files transferred from my Nikon D850 (adobe claims that versions of CameraRaw 9.12 or later should be fine).

On the other hand, Photoshop CS6 opens DNG files created from my Nikon D750 with CameraRaw 7.0.

Does anyone know what's going on here?

Do I have to convert NEF files to DNG format?

If no, how do I uninstall CameraRaw 10.5?

Hi,

We're sorry about the trouble while trying to open the NEF files from the Nikon D850. Photoshop CS6 does not support Camera raw version released after version 9.1.1. Please check: https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html

Since the 10.5 version of Camera Raw is not compatible with Photoshop CS6, the application would not be able to use it to open the NEF files. The DNG file format however, is a non propriatary file format which Photoshop CS6 supports & hence is able to open it. You can use the DNG files from the Camera or convert the Raw files to DNG files using the Adobe DNG converter & open them in Photoshop CS6.

You can check out more details about the Adobe DNG conveter here: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/adobe-dng-converter.html

You can try using the Creative Cloud cleaner tool to try & uninstall Camera Raw 10.5. You can check the details about the Creative Cloud cleaner tool here: https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/cc-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html

Nikunj

Thanks for the feedback.

However, since the installer informed me that CameraRaw 10.5 was successfully installed, how do I uninstall it, since it is incompatible with CS6?

Thanks,

You can try using the Creative Cloud cleaner tool as sugested earlier to check if Camera Raw 10.5 appears as an option to remove it. If you are using a Windows machine, you can also go to the location C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins and check if a folder labelled 'CC' exists. If it does, open it, go to File Formats and delete the Camera Raw.8bi file.
