i've a relatively new imac w/latest versions of camera raw and PS on it. i have the hdr setting checked. however, when i open an image from LRC and click filter, camera raw, that hdr button does not appear.

Filter > Camera Raw contains only a subset of the actual Camera Raw functions.
Alternate Method: Instead of Edit in PS from Lightroom, choose Edit in > Open as Smart Object in Photoshop then double-click the Smart Object in the Layers panel to open the Camera Raw plugin (not filter) and you should see the [HDR] button.
