Question

Masking in Camera Raw - especially Sky (again)

It looks a lot like the CR18 bug described earlier, but it differs, and I have tried out to solve it.

Photoshop 27.3.1

Bridge 16.02.23

Camera Raw 18.1.1.2422

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070

64 GB RAM

It started som updates ago, and it’s always in selecting the sky by itself or as a part of the landscape selection. Typically I get the message “Something went wrong...”

Usually, it’s a problem in Camera Raw interface itself, but when opened through Photoshop, it may work well.

I have reset all preferences in CR and Bridge, my GPU drivers are absolutely up to date as well as my Windows.

After reset it worked one time!! Then it came back.

If I reset GPU support in the Camera Raw settings, it will work for a while - nobody knows how long, but the error comes back.

These maskings as well as other related editing has worked flawlessly for months, but lately - and here I am not sure for exactly how long - after some updates, it fails!

Hi @jan_lemmy

Could you share a screenshot of the error message you’re seeing, along with a full screen capture of the Photoshop window when it happens? It also helps to know if the same issue appears in Lightroom or Lightroom Classic, since they use the same Camera Raw technology.

When you can, please share your System Info as well. You can find it in Photoshop under Help, then System Info. Just copy it into a text file and attach it to your reply, or feel free to share it through Google Drive, WeTransfer, or any file‑sharing platform you prefer.
Thanks so much.

Hi Alek.

Sure!! Thank you much for the reply.

I just tried now, but of course it can be difficult to reproduce an error on command. It though started by seeing no landscape at all a couple of times (attached photo), but after that it would select.
I will sure bring it on ASAP.

Hi Alek.

I got an example this morning. I send you a link to the following. Hope my explanation is sufficient:
Eight pictures and one textfile. The latter is the Photoshop System Info. Pictures can be described as follows (I have renamed them individually to support this):

Two Landscape Selections in CR (2 pics) and the corresponding masks (2 pics). Note that Sky is not selected here.

The error prompt for both pictures when I tried to separately select Sky in the following (2 pics).

Then the last two pictures where I opened these two Raw files in Photoshop and (successfully) selected Sky when using the same mask selection after opening Camera Raw in the Filter menu.

You can get it all here:

Camera Raw Masking Errors

Please let me know if/when you have copied them.

Thank you for your time.
