New ACR V17 Denoise implementation very slow to open into Photoshop.

Running the latest Bridge+ACR+Photoshop on a high end Windows 11 desktop. Ton of memory, big, fast GPU.

 

When I implement the ACR Technology Previews and use the "new" Denoise implementation (no DNG files), all seems to work OK. However, when I open a denoised raw from ACR into Photoshop it takes 35 to 60 seconds. Using the old method and creating a DNG takes only about 10 seconds.

 

And strangely, if I save a 16 bit Prophoto Tif of the denoised raw directly from ACR, it takes only a 2 to 3 seconds. And that Tif, of course, opens instantly in Photoshop. So, do others see the same long delay opening in Photoshop? Or do I have something amiss in my system?

    I have a intel i9 computer with RTX 4060. With ACD 16 I was able to denoise 2000 photos in about 6 hours (with dng file result). Now with the new ACR 17, 100 photos take about 9 hours!

    I am facing a serious problem. I have to uninstall the current CameraRAW and go back to the old version, I hope I can find a simple way.

    With the old Denoise version (DNG creation) my Windows 11 system would move along OK, 7 to 10 seconds per image (done one at a time). But then it would drop off and start taking 30+ seconds per image. I would close all Adobe and re-launch and things would be back to normal for a while. In the old days, such degradation over time used to be the sign of a memory leak. Software not able to clean up after itself.

    I suggest you batch some images to see if that's happening to you. Do a batch of 10, then another 10, then another 10, and see if it starts slowing down. Then close and re-launch and see if speed comes back.

    I've kept every copy of Camera Raw.8bi for years because there was a track record of problems on new releases. If you can't find the old version let me know. Or, you could just uninstall and re-install the old Photoshop. Creative Cloud lets you do that. Or just have patience, a patch release will come soon.

    Thanks for your reply.

    I solved the problem temporarily. The problem was solved when I turned off the "Tech Preview" option in Camera Raw settings. It works by creating a new DNG file as before and slow denoise problem is solved. Therefore I did not need to install an old version of ACR. Thank you very much for your offer of help.

    Well, I guess I spoke too soon. Last night I achieved "normal" operations for repeated edits over about an hour. Then I shut down and went to bed. Today, I'm back to weirdness. 10 to 40 seconds to open a denoised raw into Photoshop from ACR hosted in Bridge. So I tried Erik's trick to host ACR in Photoshop instead. I did that by simply drag and drop from Bridge. It worked, instant open in Photoshop.

     

    But then in more testing I noticed something strange. I monitored Bridge and Photoshop with the Windows Task Manager. When I open a denoised raw in ACR from either Bridge or Photoshop, the CPU goes up to 99% for about 40 seconds while the GPU floats between 0% and 30%. This is while I do nothing. Just sit and watch. When I do the same on a raw with no denoise, the CPU goes up to 35% for only about 10 seconds.

     

    I think I'm going to give up now, and wait for the next "patch" releases. I bet there are some coming soon.

    An update... My Win11 system has one SSD "system" drive and one HDD "data" drive. All my images are on the HDD. Based on comments in other forums, I moved some raw files to the SSD drive to test. When I denoised a raw file on the SSD and opened it in Photoshop it was fast. Less than 2 seconds to open in Photoshop. But I couldn't believe 2 seconds vs. 50 seconds could be just the difference between SSD and HDD.

     

    So I started over, repeating the tests. But Eureka! Now when I process a raw file off the HDD all steps are normal fast. The initial tick of Denoise is still just under 10 seconds, and the open in Photoshop is now under 2 seconds. I've closed everything and completely restarted Windows twice now. This normal, faster processing remains consistent.

     

    So, it seems the one shot processing off the SSD triggered something within the Adobe config that set things right. I've never seen anything like this in decades with Adobe.

    I will try this out when I have chance. All my photos live on SSDs however though not on the system drive.

    One thing I have observed is that this problem only exists, for me at least, if Camera Raw is hosted by Bridge. If hosted by Photoshop denoised images open with no observable delay.

    35 to 60 sec? Well I can beat that. Opening a denoised image takes well, forever! I won't delve into PC specs, suffice to say mine is way up there.
