After you update the copy of ACR that supports it or, convert to DNG with the latest (later) version for PS 2019's ACR.

I believe that Canon R5 support was added to Camera Raw v12.4  8 / 2020

I hope this helps

I just tried to open the Canon R5 .cr3 files in LRCC, Bridge and PS.  No  luck. I checked Adobe Cloud and I have the latest version of all 3.  Version 12.3 of Camera Raw, LRCC 9.3 and PS 21.21.  What's up....

When is Adobe ever going to do something?  This issue has been out for over three years now!

We all pay for a subscription and get nothing for it.

It can be easily opened by Adobe DNG Converter by changing the compatibility in the "Preferences" menu. Open DNG Converter; Click "Change Preferences" in bottom of the window; in the new window click on "Compatibility" and select "Custom" leave default "Backward Version, DNG 1.4" unchanged but check the two boxes (linear and Uncompressed). That's it, .CR3 files will open right away.

I have the same problem. I have just purchased a Canon EOS R. I also have a new Macbook Pro. All Adobe software is newly installed and up to date. With my old CR2 files I can open from Bridge by double clicking the file. This doesn't happen with the CR3 files. ACR does recognise them because I can right click and ask to open in ACR. Photoshop preferences only shows Canon CRW, CR2 files to open automatically in ACR. I can't add the CR2 file to that list. Adobe needs to change it and update Photoshop or ACR,

I have spoken to Adobe on the phone and they start asking stupid questions about my MAC, but seem to refuse to accept that it is a change they need to address with an update.

Come on ADOBE get your finger out please!

Hi Bazzatee

I don't have an EOS R but just downloaded a couple of sample files. When I double clicked in Bridge it gave me a Windows dialogue asking which application to use to open the file. I chose Photoshop CC 2019. This updated the Windows 10 file associations and the files now open directly from Bridge into ACR with a double click. So the Windows OS associations are used if Bridge does not override them.

So try updating the Operating System associations rather than Bridge. Sorry, I don't use a Mac so can't give you a direct instruction on how to do that in your Mac OS.

Hi Bazzatee

I don't have EOS R or Canon, but I do have Mac and Nikon, so I'll add to what Dave said.

  • In Finder on a Mac:
Select the image in Finder and Cmd+I or File Get Info > Open With: Photoshop > Change All... (Important)

  • In Bridge on a Mac:
Bridge > Prefs > File Type Associations > Canon Raw > Photoshop
  • I prefer to Cmd+R in Bridge to open ACR without opening PS. Double-clicking opens both and most times I don't need PS.

Did you ever figure out how to open the files Steven?  I have PS version Adobe Photoshop Version: 20.0.3 20190130.r.57 2019/01/30: 1204598  x64 and camera raw plug in version 11.2.0.135.  I got the Canon RP and I have tried the DNG converter and the plug in update.  Neither one will work.  I can't open the .CR3 files in Lightroom or Photoshop.  I don't know if it's my computer or what.  I have a 2017 MacBook and I have the adobe Photoshop / Lightroom subscription.  As far as I know they are both up to date.  Any ideas?

Hi Dave,

do you know how long it takes to support CR3 from the EOS RP. Waiting hard for it :-)

Thanks in advance.

According to Adobe, I have the latest version of Lightroom Classic CC and it will not recognize the files.  But the question is when can I open the Canon R .CR3 raw files in Photoshop? Or I guess Lightroom Classic CC.

1. In Help > System Info, what version of PS does it show?

2. In the Adobe Creative Cloud app, log out and log back in. That may bring up the update properly.
