Question

Original Canon CRWs into DNG

Hi All.

I'm looking for advice from a raw conversion guru on how to convert original Canon CRW files to DNG. I think the source files are from a Canon PowerShot A590IS dating back to 2010.

Adobe DNG Converter doesn't want to play ball no matter what version is selected. I have managed to convert to TIFF online using Picflow but that isn't an ideal workflow - I've found 4726 files I want to convert!

Some photo programs do open the original files (Adobe won't accept the file upload so it can be found here: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/wzxx950u9nts3e83acscc/ACkKE422_13YXtuMnR5p4FA?rlkey=n87wk1njtfp064fajcumrpbky&st=9zieltwp&dl=0), e.g. Topaz DeNoise AI and Photomatix Pro 7, but I want my starting point to be in Lightroom after an initial conversion.

If anyone has a solution to get me DNG files then please do let me know. Otherwise, I'll have to go the slower route via online conversion to TIFF in small batches.

Cheers,

KL

If you want to do some actual editing of the .crw files before a conversion, then open source editors like Raw Therapee or darktable can do that.

If TIFF is an acceptable format to convert to, and you’d like to save time by eliminating the Internet upload/download step, there are a lot more options than just Adobe apps or Picflow.

I tried your sample file in xnView MP (free for personal use) and GraphicConverter (Mac only, shareware) and they both easily converted that Canon CRW file to TIFF with options (compression, etc). Both apps provide extensive batch processing/conversion features.

Thanks for those suggestions, Conrad. I will investigate....

Originally that camera did not support shooting in camera raw.

Are you using something like CHDK to enable raw file format shooting as crw files?

Hi Jeff.

Yes, SDM was used to enable raw.

The Canon PowerShot A590IS is not on the list of supported cameras

I downloaded the file, but no Adobe application would open it. In the DNG converter I got "There was an error parsing the file".

RawDigger did open it, but reported a File format error, and displayed no metadata from the camera.

So apart from being unsupported by Adobe, there seems to be something wrong with the file.

Appreciate the response on your findings.

Sounds like I will have to persist with Picflow: https://picflow.com/convert/crw-to-tiff

I have converted about 250 CRW files into TIFF so far to see how long it might take to do the full 4700. Fortunately, my internet is pretty fast so I will make this a little project.

Thanks again.
