Announcing a new feature now in Adobe Camera Raw (17.2) – Removal of Distracting People

Under the Remove dialog, under Distraction Removal, we have added an item called “People”.

This feature supports faster and easier detection and removal of distracting people in an image. It is offered as a Tech Preview in the Adobe Camera Raw Plugin-only and is available now. Please try it out and let us know what works well, what doesn’t work well, and anything that might improve the experience.

Thank you!

Sometimes it works great, but it frequently hallucinates when tasked with removing many targets. It had a dozen people identified, but replaced a few with these distinguished Londoners

A few more attempts led to all kinds of different hallucinations. Interestingly enough, the AI placed these generated people at the same spot and in the same configuration ( pair, one, one)

I had flawless performance on this on my latest photo. Ive used it several times before, and each time it was pretty good, but this time the first try was astounding. (see before and after below) Wow, I am impressed!!

Yes when it works it's like magic. But then you come across a scene that makes you bang your head against a wall.
plus - editing hundreds of photos per shoot, I wish it would produce more consistent results across similar images with how it renders the space the people or objects were removed from.
in acr, it will produce totally different results across a batch of 20 similar photos at a time. Some get replaced with weird looking 'people', other animals or out of place trees. Regardless it's almost impossible to use with consistency.

when it works though - it's oh so good and extremely time saving.

Peu mieux faire.

Why does remove distracting people itself generate new people? Seems bizzare to me.

Yes exactly

Please make the PIN bigger. Too often I can't find the PIN. Maybe it's my eyes.

It is not really helpful when you try to remove people and AI creates another people

I tried this - it selected the distracting people in the background well, then when I went to "remove" them, all three options showed the people replaced with... different people! Whoops.

  • It would be helpful if you could edit the selection (Add/Subtract) for each pin individually.
  • Sometimes multiple individuals or groups of people are included in a single pin, so having a "Split Pin" function where the user can guide the AI to create multiple pins from a single pin would be helpful.  I suspect that would help the AI and it would allow the user to delete pins for people you don't want to remove.
  • Being able to select specific people, as opposed to selecting everybody would be good.  Perhaps a "Detect People" option in Remove where the user could highlight an individual to guide the AI?
  • Resolution, resolution, resolution!

Thanks,

Clicking remove people often in fact adds other, weirdly formed people (as does the gen AI in the firstplace). There should be a way to specify that one wants something removed and the background regenerated rather than some random thing added.
