Announcing a new feature now in Adobe Camera Raw (17.2) – Removal of Distracting People

Under the Remove dialog, under Distraction Removal, we have added an item called “People”.

This feature supports faster and easier detection and removal of distracting people in an image. It is offered as a Tech Preview in the Adobe Camera Raw Plugin-only and is available now. Please try it out and let us know what works well, what doesn’t work well, and anything that might improve the experience.

Thank you!

I am trying to remove people from my photo using the new tool, but it only detects one person instead of six, so unfortunately only one person is removed.
I have tried this with different photos, but each time, only one person is removed.

First time i tried there is a big smudge on it so now i have to bring the picture into Photoshop as the remove tool still works better there?

Oh dear, needs a lot more work.  Replacing people with ......people!

I tried it on an Image of "Ponte degli Scalzi" in Venice which has little Pillars as Bridge railing. The People remove Tool, found most People, made the selection of the People even over the Railing where the People peaked through, but it had difficulties removing those parts of the People peaking through the Railing Pllars. After the remove action, the Space between the Pillars stayed the same, dark Legs of the former People standing there, instead of being replaced by the background sky.

Also, the Tool selection wend over unnecessairy details of the Bridge Railing, resulting in removing  and replacing Bridge Details that where not parts of a Person, altering the Appearance of the Bridge.

Therefor, it would be nice to be able to edit the automatically generated Mask of the Person remove tool. Including Parts of the Image that it missed, and excluding Parts that one would like to protect from being altered.

Overall I like the ne Person and Reflection Remove Tools and the time saving they offer.

I love working with Lightroom Classic, thanks for still doing further development!

Si ça ce n'est pas se moquer de ses clients, je ne vois pas l"utilité de cette daube inutilisable ! Mise à jour qui ne doit amuser qu'Adobe surtout quand on voit arriver les nouveaux tarifs !

Sometimes I want to remove all of the people.  Unable to add people or exclude others. Otherwise it does a good job removing the ones it does identify.

Was so excited for a second, then, first time using it to get rid of a person, it literally puts another person there.

So far, this feature does not work nearly as well as it does in Photoshop. In my case, the removal often replaces the removed areas with unwanted generative content. (In this example, I removed people and got ducks instead!)

It would be very helpful to add or subtract parts of the detected people as we can with manual removal. Often the auto-detection fails to grab the shadow leading to poorer results.

The tool found a regular person in the background walking towards me which was a promising start.

However, post-processing, instead of providing a suitably-blank background replacement it offered 3 different choices of people moving away from me: a woman on a bicycle, a military person (sailor?) and a businessman who appears to have a skip in their step.

These replacements were very-well integrated into the image; however, the tool is advertised as "distraction removal" (rather than "random alternative distraction substitution") - which is exactly what I am looking for.

Hi, I tried the new Distraction Removal-People tool today for the first time.  I wanted to remove a body that was half in and half out at the edge of my photo.  It removed the body but replaced the removed image with a leg and foot protruding into the photo from the edge where the body had been removed.  I removed the leg and foot manually.  This reminds me of when the remove tool was new, to me it worked about 30/40%.  The tool tended to remove the item in question but replace it with a similar item, e.g. remove an out streched arm with an arm with the hand curled or distorted.  I will say, at this point, the manual remove tool is great, it works well and consistently and the past issues appear to have been resolved.   It appears the new Distraction removal tool is having the same issues as the original manual remove tool had.
