P: Generative Expand (CR)

Updated on July 7th, 2026.

This post is to collect in-app customer feedback on the Generative Expand feature in Camera Raw.

Generative Expand seamlessly blends the edges of your existing image with newly generated content that naturally fits into the background without taking away from your photo’s original subject. Some use cases for Generative Expand are:

  • Expand the canvas for images that were accidentally cropped
  • Fill in the edges of Geometry Edits
  • Adjust the aspect ratio of a photo for social media

We'd love to hear what it does well, what it doesn't, and how you'd like it to work.

Please also include the following details in your post:

  • Camera Raw version
  • System details
  • Example image(s) if you wish to share

Our team continually monitors this thread. Thanks!

Thanks!

When trying to send you feedback, I keep finding Send button is Gray out or ‘something's gone wrong’ error message. What is the cause of this?

I’d provide a lot more feedback if it weren’t for the fact that so often I can't post what I've just spent 30 minutes documenting. Why does SEND button get greyed out so often?

First test result in ACR was done in two stages, saved in between.
Mac Book Pro: M3, 64GB, 1TB SSD, Sequoia 15.7.4

File: 24MB dng

GOOD:

  • match to bokeh / blurred / sharp areas good
  • Transition from original to expansion area almost imperceptible
  • composition and colour (finishing toe cap missing from shoe) perfect
  • logical extension of other elements (grass, woodland, foreground log)

TO IMPROVE:

  • Visible line where 2nd expansion joins previously expanded image.
  • I look forward to the day when these AI tools no longer persist in adding extraneous objects, in this case the extra bit of orange T-shirt under the child's foot. (Sorry, can't post whole pic due to client privacy, but if that bit of orange tummy were real, the person would have to be very fat, very pregnant or have a serious hernia).
  • Please include Gen Expand in LrC Adobe! Like many, I've been eagerly awaiting this feature in LrC for years. It was so disappointing to discover it arrived in LR (which I loath, and would only ever use for a quick phone edit on the move) but not in LrC. The results in LR were also dreadful, unusable. Here’s hoping its appearance in ACR heralds its imminent arrival into LrC! Any news on this?
    Area to expand.

  • Sample showing boundaries of first and second transition, new toecap and extraneous orange edition
Expand Crop 2nd iteration
  • Expand Crop 3rd iteration

Once all edits done in ACR (18,6) including Flattened AI edits I was unable to bring the image into PS. I had to delete the Flat AI edits to bring it into PS.

I'm having a similar issue intermittently, specifically with Generative Expand. See post above.

If I brought the image directly into PS 27.10 it would open normally. Unfortunately coming from Bridge it would not, resulting in a blank screen in PS.

I havent used it but everytime I open ACR the gen expand popup block me from editing until i click the button. This Happens every time I open a different photo to crop.

A waste of time. It doesn’t handle GFX photos very well—well, they’re high-resolution files.
The results with D810 photos are terrible, too…
But, for heaven’s sake, it’s a waste of time and money even with D200 photos!!!! After all, that’s quality from over 20 years ago and small file sizes.
It’s a shame, th

it’s absolutely insane that we have to pay for credits when the program still produces results no where near the expectation.

Camera raw 18.4.1.2647

In this latest version of Camera Raw, the “Constrain Crop” checkbox has disappeared from the Geometry tab. It's very useful when adjusting the scale and the X or Y offset, which are never very precise. It would also be nice to have more precision in this adjustment—for example, by pressing a key to change the value in increments of 0.1.
Personally, this is something I do every day to crop photos of paintings taken in museums. It shouldn’t be that complicated to implement, and it would be great to have more precision.

Thanks

Great idea, I also wish I could press a key to have pixel level control when cropping.

Results were terrible and unusable.
