P: (Technology Preview) Generative Expand (CR)

This post is to collect in-app customer feedback from Camera Raw for the Technology Preview of the Generative Expand feature.

Generative Expand seamlessly blends the edges of your existing image with newly generated content that naturally fits into the background without taking away from your photo’s original subject. Some use cases for Generative Expand are:
  • Expand the canvas for images that were accidentally cropped
  • Fill in the edges of a panorama
  • Adjust the aspect ratio of a photo for social media

This feature is currently a Technology Preview, and we are still working to ensure it meets your needs. We'd love to hear what it does well, what it doesn't do well, and how you'd like it to work.

Please also include the following details in your post:
  • Camera raw version
  • System details
  • Example image(s) if you wish to share

Our team continually monitors this thread. Thanks!

Thanks!

Extremely simple generative expands are not supported in Camera Raw. Even extending a blank canvas doesn't work. I need to convert the CR3 file to a PSD and use the generative expand feature in Photoshop. I don't understand why the AI GE features in Camera Raw aren't using the same AI GE engine as in Photoshop. I would prefer to keep everything saved in an ACR sidecard if possible. This would greatly help with my non-destructive workflow. Especially since I'm dealing with thousands of images from a photoshoot.

ACR 17.5. M3 Mac. When I expand in the crop tool in deep shadows I get smearing streaks which are independent of any exposure adjustments so it's impossible to darken it down so it blocks up and disappears. It just changes it's streaking. There is also a very different noise/grain characteristic to the expanded element which when it happens can make the expand unuseable. I have attached these screenshots to try and show the issues. 01 is the base image with no exposure or crop adjustments. 02 is top right at 100% with huge exposure change to show the underlying noise/grain structure. 03 is top right at 100% without any exposure change. There is no smearing or streaking. 04 is top right at 100% after expand and with expsure lift to show the difference in the noise/gain structure. 05 is top right at 100% showing smearing/streaking which also happens in the non expanded portion of that screenshot. (I appreciate it is hard to see, but it is there and very evident to my eye on a calibrated Eizo). 06 is the resulting expandedimage. Until I can resolve the smearing/streaking in the shadows I cannot use this result unfortunately. The smearing is actually in the entire frame after expansion if one adjusts the levels to darken the entire image down to black. This artefact isn't present if the same exposure adjustment is done pre-expansion.

Generative Expand is always a blurry addition, what is the point.  You are adding blurriness right next to in focus content.  silly, useless.

Would love to be able to "batch-generative-expand" instead of one image at a time. Similar to being able to batch Denoise.
Thank me later!

Issue with Gen Expanding Blue Angles jet with blue cloudless sky. The tip of the jet nose is on the edge of frame with a very little blue sky between jet nose and the edge of frame. After Gen Expanding the nose of the jet is blurred. The jet nose did not need expanding and a small area of blue sky was visible between edge of frame and the jet nose before expanding.

On another picture (from the same airshow) gen expanding the blue cloudless sky left visable lines in the sky where the new and oringinal sky met. BTW, I also corrected the lens optics and removed the vignette before Gen Expanding.

Thanks

I am having problem on Win10 ACR Generative Expand - when click "generate" - error message "We've encountered an issue and can't complete your request at this time. Please try again later".

I try to disable firewall, hosts, restarts, nothing helps.. ACR ver 17.4.1 .

What is it?

I have lost the crop tool in Camera Raw. All I get is the Geometry icon. I spent an hour online with Adobe yesterday and that person could not find a crop tool. I have the latest Camera Raw version 17.5. Any ideas where the trouble may lie?

This is no doubt because you are using the Camera Raw Filter accessed from within Photoshop and not the Camera Raw Plugin.

There is no crop tool available in the filter and never has been.

What type of images are you trying to open and how are you going about that?

Please give full details.

Thank you for the responce. That is exactly what I have been doing, using
the Camera Raw Filter from within Photoshop. How do I access the Camera Raw
plugin?

Resolution is the big issue same for Photoshop. It needs to analyze the images resolution then match it, else it looks bad. If it takes much more time to generate I am ok if I so choose to match resolution.

Camera raw 17.4.1, Windows 11 Pro 23H2 July 2025 update, i9-13950HX, Nvidia RTX 4000 Ada laptrop GPU, 64 GB RAM SSDs 1 +2 TB. NEF files from Nikon  Z72.

When expanding two corners after manual tranformation (vertical) area less than 2000x2000p, the detail in the expanded area is very blurry. The adjacent are includes foliage with very sharp leaves.

Expansions with adjacent clear geometrical patterns works well.
