Picture Profiles stripped out when converting to DNG

Hi there,

I was playing with DNG conversion of my NEF files to save space but I noticed this thing:

opening the original NEF file with MacOS’s preview and then launching the Inspector tool (cmd+I) I have a “Picture Style” tab that contains informations about the colour space used in the camera settings.

If I convert that NEF files to DNG, the “picture Style” tab has gone … and, with it, the pieces of information that were there.

so when converting to DNG with ACR DNG converter why those informations are gone? and how to preserve them?

The color space setting (sRGB or Adobe RGB) in the camera is for jpgs, as well as for the embedded jpg previews in the raw files. Raw files don’t have a color space – they are one channel greyscale files.

If you examine the Exif data in the DNG file (I used RawDigger in the example below), you’ll find Color space under MakerNotes. Mac Preview most likely only displays a small part of the Exif data.

When you convert a raw file to DNG, it is still a raw file, and no data or metadata is lost.
The example below is for a DNG file converted from a NEF file.

I don’t believe that DNG preserves the proprietary manufacturer-specific info. Picture Style is not a standard.
