When selecting an area to enhance (increase or decrease exposure, etc.) using Radial Gradient, it changes the selected area's color. In particular, it changes it to purple. Why?

Because that's how the tools were designed here, in Photoshop etc. IOW, there isn't a hue protection when you adjust brightness. By design.

It is easier to avoid this, if you wish, in Photoshop using blend modes that don't allow hue/sat to be affected with brightness.
