When I open an image from RAW into Photoshop it opens much lighter than in RAW. This has only been happening recently after my operating system went down and had to be re-installed.

What did you end up doing?

I tried a few things, some you suggested. One thing I noticed was that my files were set for 32 bit and I changed this to 16bit. Next time I checked and opened a file from Camera RAW into photoshop the brightness stayed exactly the same. Probllem solved and thanks for all your help.

What do you mean"it opens much lighter than in RAW"?

The raw isn't rendered, it looks like this in reality:

Are you saying that the rendered image in Photoshop from ACR looks lighter than the embedded JPEG or what you see on the back of the camera?

That isn't the raw, that is simply one interpretation of the raw from the camera made into a JPEG preview.

So the question is, what you see in ACR match what you see in Photoshop after you click the "Open" button there? It should.

Hi Digital Dog, After I have worked on an image in Camera RAW and I open it
in Photoshop it opens considerably lighter than it was in RAW. About 3
stops if you are as old as me. It is not possible to get the image back to
looking as it was in RAW. This only started happening after my Mac's
operating system went down and I had it reinstalled. I'm trying to find a
solution.

Not sure I'm as old as you but yeah, I know three stops from film etc.

I still don't know what you mean when you say: "It is not possible to get the image back to
looking as it was in RAW." You are never seeing the raw.

So again, if I understand you, and please confirm:

1. Open raw in ACR. Maybe edit with sliders, maybe not>

2. Click on "Open" and the image appears in Photoshop.

Result: Image no looks 3 stops darker (yes or no).

Expected: Image in ACR and Photoshop match (yes, they should).

IF what I've described is correct, try this:

In Camera Raws preferences, disable GPU in Preformance and try again: Good or not? If not:

First, try disabling GPU in the Preferences (Performance tab). In Photoshop also go to Preferences > Technology Previews... and enable "Older GPU mode (pre 2016)" - Restart Photoshop. Any better?

If not, recalibrate and build a new ICC display profile, the old one might be corrupted.
If you are using software/hardware for this task, be sure the software is set to build a matrix not LUT profile, Version 2 not Version 4 profile.

If turning OFF GPU works, it's a GPU bug and you need to contact the manufacturer or find out if there's an updated driver for it. On the Mac, that's part of the OS update(s) so if this is the latest OS version, you may need to roll back a release.
