XMP changes not loading in ACR

When someone sends me an NEF file along with its sidecar XMP file, the changes recorded in that XMP don't show up in ACR.

My own NEF and XMP files load fine...

I can load that sent file in Lighroom and the changes will show (crop, lens profiles, exposure, etc.)

Any suggestions?

  • Is your version of Camera Raw the latest? Maybe they're using a newer version that isn't allowing images to open, if you have an older version.

If they're using a previous version, then it should work.

Where are you placing the XMP?

To make this a lot easier and to store a lot more useful data (for example, camera profiles), I'd suggest you go back and forth using a DNG. Everything gets stored in that container, and more than can be stored just through XMP. The NEF raw data is just as raw in a DNG container.

The XMP files travel along with the NEF. I have used DNG and all the changes are there. I was just wondering why the NEF & XMP combination no longer worked.
