CF 2023 installation challenges on Windows 10 Pro

I'm attending CF Summit 2023 and I decided to download CF 2023 trial/developer edition with the intent of using a server instance with CF Builder (already installed) on my laptop running Windows 10 Pro. I've previously installed CF 2021 server.

I've run into a several problems:

  1. Clicking or extracting the zip file did not initiate the install process.
  2. I could not find any file to kick off the installation process...but after researching...I attempted to run the \bin\cfinstall.bat, but this did not work (splash screen displays briefly then vanishes).
  3. I finally ran the cfinstall.bat from the command prompt (as administrator!!) and it seemed to work but I missed the step to create windows services.
  4. I ran the cfinstall.bat (again) but this seemed to create some kind of duplicate install (with NO option to create windows services).
  5. I tried running \bin\cfstart.bat from the command prompt and this displays a plethora of error messages related to duplicate objects, missing packages...scary stuff.

So I've about reached the end of my tether here, and must decide on a new path.

  • Troubleshoot/fix the problems with my current installation (where to begin?)
  • Figure out how to 'uninstall' whatever has been partially installed?
  • Wipe laptop and begin again (I had no Restore Point)?

Any ideas/feedback would be appreciated. I attached the cfstart.bat output from the command prompt.

Ok on that (and thanks for marking my reply as an answer).

As for your next attempt, since you say you'll be rerunning the cfinstall.bat, that suggests you'll try the zip install approach again. (There's no need of cfinstall.bat if you run the full installer.) In that case, there's no need to download the zip again if you still have it.

But yes, if you want to try the full installer (which presumes to implement ALL packages), then yes you'll want to download that.

First let's clarify that you didn't NEED to go the zip route.  When you downloaded the zip, you could have downloaded the full installer instead.

And if you didn't use that zip install approach with CF2021, there's no particular need to switch to it now.

And to be clear, you could just delete (or rename) the folder where you unzipped it. Nothing you did with that cfinstall.bat modified things outside of that. (Unless you told it to install the cf Add on or .Net services, in which case those implemented uninstallers you could run. Let us know if you hit any trouble with that.)

As for why your experience went poorly, my guess is you ran the cfinstall.bat from within windows explorer. You do need to run it as admin, which worked later for you at the cmd line. The message that flew by was likely telling you that.

And double clicking the zip would do nothing but open the zip as if it was a folder...though it's still a zip. You did need to extract it first. There are online cf install docs to explain all this, and a Readme in the zip iirc.

Finally, as for the step to create the service, once you missed it and finished the installer (cfinstall.bat) there would be no way with that to try again. (They COULD have designed for that use case but did not.) And you COULD create the service with the command line windows SC command. But really, just follow my first steps above and get on with the more important work you surely have to do. 🙂

Thanks Charlie, I'm on the road today, but I'll re-download and place the files in a new directory, and re-run that cfinstall.bat using the cmd line.
