HI, I purchased a Cf exam study guide book last week. Ben Forta's book actually, but when I got it, I noticed it was from 2001..lol I think I will work through most of it, but I wanted to find a current version or something similar. I've searched a little but have yet to find anything. Can anyone recommend any study guides or even websites that are test preps? I figure if I start studying and preparing now, in a year or so I may be ready...lol Thanks in advance!

Teedoffnewbie, let no one fool you. Certifications do matter! This has little to do with ColdFusion, a lot to do with current IT culture, in general. That accounts for the existence of all those certifications and their respective courses, institutes, schools, software, training and revision websites, universities, and so on. The constant, overwhelming supply should tell you something about the demand.

Employers always look at experience, certainly. However, they look at certificates, too, despite what some have said here. In fact, every  employer I know prefers candidates with certificates. Employers are aware that, in the internet era, your professed list of software projects might just be a copy of somebody else's work. Whereas, a certificate is an objective indication that you at least have minimal knowledge of the subject.

@BKBK: Thanks for the info and opinion. Honestly, I was not looking for a debate on whether it's prudent or not to obtain certification in CF, or any other area for that matter. I was merely looking for some textbooks, sites, or any other references that help prepare one for the exam. As I said, I purchased a study guide book, now I know why it was only .41 cents lol, and found out it was 10 years old. I was looking for some updated/current references I could use.

Who knows, I may never get certified in CF. I would like to be good enough to try oneday, and certainly love working in CF and hope to continue. But again, the actual study time and hopefully learning outcome is the more important benefit I was after.

the actual study time and hopefully learning outcome is the more important benefit I was after.

In that case do what I did - sit down for a couple of days and go through every single CF tag and function in alphabetical order. Read the LiveDocs properly, and have a play.

Not only will you discover a whole host of functions you wish you knew were there, but you'll be able to pass the exam as a bonus

If you pass you'll me more qualified than me.  Does that mean that you'll be answering my questions instead of me answering yours?

    ummm nope I doubt it.

I dont get to use CF as much as I want in my current job. I'm just planning for my future. And it forces me to set aside some time during my week to at least learn more CF, since I'm not using it daily.

So your position is the CF certification is worthless or at least not needed??

So your position is the CF certification is worthless or at least not needed??

Doing the study towards it will help you investigate areas of CF that you might not normally have need to.

However - coming from a background of hiring CF developers - CF Certification would only be meaningful to me if I was specifically hiring a junior developer.  For a junior developer to have made a point of getting that sort of "coverage" with CF shows an interest in the subject, and also demonstrates they probably intend to take it seriously as a career path (at least for a few years). However once one's been doing CF on a daily basis for 3-4yrs (maybe 2-3), the field experience is more valuable than some certificate.

Ok lets try this again! I replied to both of you guys last night AFTER I logged in, typed up this nice response, clicked "Post Message" and of course it said I needed to log in! So I did again, and viola! my post was gone! Love all the great help here, but please someone fix the bugs!!

lol ok now that I've ranted: Dave thanks for the response and link. I knew Adobe had lost of tutorials, just wasn't sure if any were specific to the CF exam or not. I will definately go through the one you gave me.

@ecobb. Thank you as well. I have seen that site and wondered whether it was worth it or not. $40 isnt all that much money, but just hadn't heard any recommendations for their software, so was a bit hesitant.

As I said, I think I'm more of a physical text book kinda guy. I like to have the pages there in front of me so I can turn back or rework a chapter or two if needed, but I enjoy online tutorials as well. So thanks agian both of you!

You may also want to look at the CF Exam Buster (http://www.centrasoft.com), although it currently only supports CF 8.

    I'd recommend the following:

    1. Go through the Adobe courseware for CF available here. Many of the questions are drawn directly from this:

    http://www.adobe.com/education/instruction/teach/cfcurriculum.html

The CF 9 courseware hasn't yet been posted publicly to the best of my knowledge, but things didn't change that much since CF 8.

    2. Read the new features and release notes for the last two releases (CF 9, CF 8).

If you actually do that thoroughly, and actually understand all that material, you will almost certainly ace the exam.
