CF8 ODBC Server Service files missing

Upgraded from CF7 Enterprise on Windows to CF8 Enterprise. After the installation, the "ColdFusion 8 ODBC Agent" and "ColdFusion 8 ODBC Server" services are not started. Tried to start them manually and the directory where the services point to (D:\ColdFusion8\db\slserver54\bin\...) is missing.
Of course when you go to the Administrator and add a new datasource, I get a message that the ColdFusion ODBC Server service is not running or has not been installed.
How do I install it?? I have uninstalled CF8 and reinstalled it 3 times trying to get it to install.
The server is Windows2003 Standard Edition. IIS.

Ideas??

The technote for manually installing ODBC services on CF 8.0 has published. It includes zip files that include the necessary installation files, an updated datasource.cfc and updated scripts to install and uninstall the services.

Hi, guys. I have the same problem, i dont see at all Microsoft Access with unicode support in my Coldfusion Admin , and when i try to make it manualy with JDBC i get this error :
"The ColdFusion ODBC Server service is not running or has not been installed. You may also use the "MS Access with Unicode" driver to connect to MS Access datasources."
I try some solutions you describe here , but i have a MAC running Leopard

This post is over 1 year old, so I don't really know what to expect in terms of response.

But I am running ColdFusion Server Enterprise                8,0,1,195765 under Oracle Application Server in Windows 2003 Server.

When I attempt to make an ODBC Socket Data Source, I get the error:

  • Error accessing available odbc datasources. - Unable to load library

The ColdFusion ODBC Server service is not running or has not been installed.

After searching, I found this thread:

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/402/kb402637.html

Upon following the instructions, I get this error:

Error Occurred While Processing Request

Unable to load library

The error occurred in <my cfroot>\CFIDE\adminapi\datasource.cfc: line 933
931 :                         <cfregistry
932 :                            action = "set"
933 :                            branch = "#branch##odbcserver#"
934 :                            entry = "Description"
935 :                            type = "String"

Any help getting ODBC to work in Cold Fusion 8 would be very helpful.

Thank you.

I continue to have problems getting ODBC installed in my CF 8 J2EE install. I am trying JBOSS this time. Again every thing appears to work except for the ODBC installation.

I am following these instructions: http://livedocs.adobe.com/coldfusion/8/htmldocs/help.html?content=troubleshooting_3.html

In the comments section is the line:
"Copy contents of C:\ColdFusion8\db\SequeLink folder from another working CF8 install."

I don't have a working CF 8 install from which to copy this directory.

Would someone please zip their SequeLink folder up and send it to me please? paul_peterson@iesc.net

thx

This fix only apepars to be for the single instance install. Is there a fix for the multi instance install? We are going to have to go back to backups and start all over if we can't get this resolved today.

I am running WinXP, Apache 2.2 and Tomcat 5.25 and tried to upgrade from CFMX 7 to CF 8. I ran into the same problem reported here when trying to define an ODBC datasource.

Searching around I found the scripts to remove and install the ODBC services. The one to remove the services works fine, however, when I run the install script I get ' Unable to load library'

What am doing wrong?

Any help would be appreciated.

I've gotten the problem fixed. Adobe support rep Carlos came to the rescue. Since I have Coldfusion 8 Std and not Enterprise, I was unable to export my settings. The alternative solution is to save all neo-*.xml files found in the ColdFusion8/lib/ directory to another directory. Then do the recommended uninstall and reinstall making sure you select the "Documentation" as well.
Next copy the neo-*.xml files back. I ran administrator and I saw where it migrated my CF7 settings (again) so I'm still not sure if the suggested step was necessary.
Hope this helps.....

This issue is fixed in the upcoming CF 8.01 updater that is now in beta. Again, the basic issue is that CF8.0 requires you to select to install the documentation in order to have the ODBC services installed. The exact problem is that if the documentation is not installed, the installer does not lay down cf_root\db\SequeLink Setup\ directory which has the ODBC installer. If you are in this state, you can copy cf_root\db\SequeLink Setup\ from a working installation.

There is a documented procedure for removing and installing the ODBC services here. Remember you must have the Sequelink Setup directory installed for this to work. I will publish a technote with this information and include a zipfile with the "Sequelink Setup" directory.

Thanks to VinuK for reading the docs!

I've just bumped into this same problem. My question is; I upgraded from ColdFusion 7 and all of my datasources and settings were migrated. If I do an uninstall and reinstall to fix this, do I lose all of my settings?

I am experiencing this also........ If you have the Enterprise Version do a ColdFusion Archive to capture settings. I've spent 2 days configuring my new install on my production server and do not look forward to having to redo it. I will post on whether this idea works.....Gosh, I hope so.

Yes, it is a flaw in the installer. ODBC currently is only properly installed if you also install the documentation as mentioned. This will be addressed the next time we create an installer. Until then, if you need ODBC, install the documentation and ODBC. If you do not want the docs, like on a production server, delete the cfdocs directory after the install.

As an option, maybe you could document what needs to be done to get this working properly without doing a complete reinstall. As you know, time is money and I'm sure most people here have spent many hours configuring CF8 to meet their needs, only to have some critical functionality not work properly. If you copy this folder from a working version of CF 8 some of the ODBC stuff will work, but not all: C:\JRun4\servers\cfusion\cfusion-ear\cfusion-war\WEB-INF\cfusion\db\slserver54\bin\. The part that I cannot get to work is the MS Access and ODBC Socket, all my SQL stuff seems to work properly. I haven't tried any of the other connection types.

If an installer isn't going to be released immediately, then I would suggest that Adobe create a method to get this working properly without doing a complete re-install, or provide your Accounts Payable address for all these system administrators to submit their hours to be reimbursed. CF 8 Enterprise is quite expensive and if we have to troubleshoot your products/installers, or do significant extra work due to a bug in your production release, we should be properly compensated.

I uninstalled and reinstalled again. I have the ODBC drivers now. The only thing I unchecked before was 'Documentation' and the 'Adobe LifeCycle'.
This time I only unchecked the 'Adobe LifeCycle' and now I have all of the ODBC files.
If it is required to install the Documentation to get the ODBC drivers, then that needs to be documented somewhere. Sounds like a bug to me.

We are having the exact same problem. This poses a big issue because customers with MS Access databases have problems with the native "MS Access with Unicode" driver. We need the ODBC service working.

This appears to be an installer issue. You will need to uninstall and reinstall. When you select which options you want to install, select documentation and ODBC. After the installation you can just delete the webroot\cfdocs directory if you do not want the documentation.

Thanks Ken.
So if I choose to Install the Documentation (there was no other option for 'ODBC') then the installer will install the ODBC files (along with the docs)?? That's a strange way to get the ODBC files.
On a side note, the test server where I installed 'everything' (which does have the ODBC-so maybe you are on to something here) the ODBC drivers seem very unstable. I have 2 very small Access Datasources on this test server that I may be able to query once, then any query after that locks up the CF8 ODBC server service to the point where I cannot stop and the service (the entire server MUST be rebooted to free it). Luckily I have converted all my production servers to use MS SQL - but I thought that was strange as they worked well for testing in CF7. Thanks. Dan
