cfdump errors out

If you were looking for a challenge, here it is. I have two servers with the same version of CF and Java running on each. On one, cfdump works fine all the time, on the other, it doesn't work at all. Guess which one is the production server. Even the simplest cfdump call fails - I've included the full text of an error - Maybe there's a clue in the trace I can't decipher. Is there some administrative setting I'm missing? Anything would be helpful - advice on what to try next...?

Both servers running
Version 6,0,0,58500
Edition Professional
Java Version 1.3.1_03
Windows 2000 (OS v 5.0)

    This will not be the cause of your problem (although it would not surprise
    me if it contributes to it), but you MUST upgrade from 6.0 as soon as you
    can: it was a buggy, buggy shambles (it really should not have been
    released), and a lot of the fixes for it introduced in 6.1 are not
    backwards compatible.

    Go to at least 6.1.

    8 : <cfdump var=#variables.fred#>

    Is this the exact syntax. I don't know if it is required or a best
    practice or none of the above, but I always enclose my parameters in
    quotes ("").

    <cfdump var="#variables.fred#">

    If this helps, why yours would work one place and not another I have no
    idea!
