CFMAP and CFMAPITEM ... how to modify CFMAPITEM

We've all seen the screen on Googlemaps.  And the likes of VR/BO and Air/bnb where they:

Place a list on the left, a map on the right and as you scroll down the list the pin on the map changes. 

So I used CFMAP and CFMAPITEM and all went well. 

Searched it and Adobe confirmed that there is no way using mouseover, Javascript and then change the pin color.  

So my question is, has anyone done it using CF (a workaround) or done it withOUT CF - using Google Maps API directly, and provide a simple instructions to this JS challenged human?
