ColdFusion 2016 Support for SQL 2019?

Does ColdFusion 2016 support SQL Server 2019? How about the newer versions like 2018? The Product Matrix for 2018 does not list SQL Server 2019 but I have seen some internet chatter that it was coming.

If it's not listed, it's not supported. But that doesn't mean it won't work. Very little changes between one version of SQL Server and the next, when it comes to client connectivity. So, I'm very confident you can use the DataDirect driver that comes with CF 2016 to connect to SQL Server 2019. If for some reason that's not supported, you could use Microsoft's own JDBC drivers, which you'd have to set up as "other" in the data source configuration.

To add to the answers you've received, I would suggest you only use versions of SQL Server recommended by Adobe for production. Unless you're willing to accept a substantial risk of failure. 

 

Software integration, for example, CF + SQL Server, is a common source of unpredictable behaviour. Such behaviour can be hard to anticipate or to debug. How many times have you heard, "It had been working for 8000 times. Then, all of a sudden: kaboom!". In my experience, when you hear that, nine times out of ten, it's got to do with integration.

 

When you use the technologies that the folks at Adobe recommend, you benefit from the exhaustive tests, quality control and certification they had performed beforehand.

Adding to Dave's great answer (which I agree to and have marked as "the answer" to the question), there can be times with the support matrix may not yet have been updated though some new "support" has been added. While one could look through the technotes for every CF update to see if they may mention some new support, better still is the available "update release notes" docs that Adobe offers, for both CF 2018 and 2016, which highlights the key changes across all the updates:

I can confirm there's no mention there (yet) of support for SQL Server 2019. But like Dave said, that doesn't mean it "won't work", with either the Adobe- or MS-provided driver.

Adding to my answer and Dave's (accepted as "the answer") and others, I can confirm that cf2016 (and above) DOES WORK for me with sql server 2019.

 

Again, that's not saying Adobe changed cf2016 to support it, nor that necessarily EVERY use of the combination is guaranteed to work. But I'm confirming the combination DOES work for me--since someone asked me directly, pointing to this old thread and how we'd only theorized it should work.

 

That said, we should note that since this question was first asked (and I last offered an answer), cf2016 got its last update in March 2021 and is itself no longer supported. Folks should be moving to layer, supported cf versions, for now 2018 or 2022.

I believe it does, at my company, we have cf versions from cf9 to cf2018  connecting to an azure 2019 SQL servers.
