Was going to try to use Coldfusion once again.

I used to use Dreamweaver to develop the apps but now it's cloud only.  NO THANKS!!

Other option seems to be CFBuilder 2018 but free trial download page collect my info and then nothing.

Is there a better local solution for developing CF apps?

AND IS COLDFUSION REALLY STILL ALIVE???

It seems DEAD to me!!

Thanks

Great! You know it makes sense!

Forget the language. Forget the editors.

All you have to remember is what you want to achieve, using the resources available to you.

When I started out in Java programming some 20 years ago, we wrote an entire application, on notepad as editor, for use by a coffee-machine manufacturer. Where there's a will, there's a way.

Thanks for the laugh.  Good to see CF is still alive!!

Yes I posted on Adobe site and made that comment because most of the posting seems 2 years old.

Plus,  Adobe is doing a very poor job showing CF and DW exist!

I know you have no control over the adobe site so no fault on you.

There home page adobe.com shows nothing for CF or DW.

So I search for DW and only found the cloud base.

I searched for CF and only found the trail.

Then I stumbled onto (via a google search) and adobe link that took me to a download list and saw they still had the Free CF Developers server.

But all links produced no fruit.

So I will search again for DW local since I did enjoy that product.  And will look at the other one you mensioned as well.

I will also continue to search for the Free CF Developer server since that's all I will need to code locally.

And will review your comment about the browers and download glitch adobe has.

Thanks Charlie!!!!  You were the best in my day and still are today.

Glad to help where I could. About yours saying most posts are 2 years old, where is that? It would not be this cf support forum, where there are multiple posts daily.

And the free cf developer edition is the same installer as the free trial and the commercial editions, all available from the cf product page that you can get to easiest via coldfusion.com.

There's no question that Adobe, like most large commercial orgs could make things FAR easier to find. But with several DOZEN products, we will never see cf on the front page. It is what it is.

But you will find that the community here (and still others I list at cf411.com/cfhelp) will get you answers to about any question.

Sure. It's dead. So why ask here? 🙂

OK. I'm being facetious, but I hope you get my point. Why would there be a forum here for questions? Why would it be in the top 10 of product forums at community.adobe.com? (And why would Adobe be having an annual CF Summit conference? Heck, there's yet another CF conference going on today, at IntoTheBox.org. But I realize you could understandably be unaware of both.)

Anyway, let's move on to solving your challenges.

First, to be clear, Dreamweaver is not cloud only. It would run from your computer, like always. It's just that Adobe opted to include it (and not CF) in the Creative Cloud suite. The cloud reference is a bit of a misnomer. But let's go to your next issue.

As for CF Builder not downloading when you tried to get it, that can happen (with cf, as well). The problem seems usually to have to do with cookies. It's happened often enough that I have a blog post on how to resolve the problem. Again, I appreciate that you'd not have reason to know that exists. I'm just trying to help. I can't fix Adobe's site issues.

As for "a better local solution for developing CF apps" (assuming you don't proceed with DW, which you may prefer--and will likely find far preferable vs CFBuilder, if you are a long-time DW fan) , I will note that you can "develop CF apps" in any editor at all, even Windows Notepad. But there are several other editors, and some of them even include CFML support. I keep a list of them here: https://www.cf411.com/cfeditors

One of those is Visual Studio Code (aka VSCode, which is free from MS and not to be confused with the very different and NOT-free Visual Studio). VS Code offers options for CFML support, as I note in my list--and Adobe is even working to re-build CFBuilder atop VSCode (to replace its underlying Eclipse-based architecture.

And some may want to tell you that "of course you should move to VSCode. The whole world is going that way". And to that, I will say that a DW person may not love it as much as others. For those used to the power of wysiwyg editing in DW, they may miss that.

That said, there are extensions offering live preview of HTML (not the HTML generated via CFML, though). And if it may be of interest, there's a docs page for VSCode on editing HTML with it.  I realize you asked about editors for CFML, but since you're a DW fan and may be heavily invested in HTML and its HTML-based capabiities, this seemed worth calling out for you.

So there you go. Plenty to chew on. I hope you may find satisfaction with one of these solutions. Others may chime in with still more for you to consider. And long live CF!

BTW/FYI

Just tried https://www.cf411.com/cfeditors and it has nothing listed.  It takes me to https://www.carehart.org/cf411/#cfeditors and it's blank

Yes, the cf411.com url redirects to that (large) page on my carehart.org site. But I've never heard that it was blank. Please try refreshing your browser.
