Hi,

I am considering going for the coldfusion certification. Any recommendations on books to prep with? I have been using coldfusion since 4.0 days, however I am certain that this type of test is going to require some prep work.

Any suggestions?

So Bob, would you say that your experience with the test so far is that your eventual score is unlikely to correlate to your actual ability to create and maintain effective ColdFusion applications?

Since you did not know the answers to a lot of the questions, you are obviously not qualified or capable of constructing professional quality CF based applications. True or False?

The test is an accurate reflection of your ability to construct professional quality CF based applications. True or False?

See where we are going with this particular certification?

I just downloaded the CFMX Exam Buster by Centrasoft ( http://www.centrasoft.com/) and gave it a try. I didn't know the answer to alot of the questions. Funny, I have developed complex applications for huge clients (banks, military, etc) and have no idea how to answer most of these. Is this what the test is like?

Please... None of the developers I know need a certificate to prove to THEMSELVES that they have a certain level of understaing of ANYTHING.

People who know their stuff prove it to themselves day in and day out. The certificate is to prove to OTHER people (employer / potential employer) that they know the product or technology in question.

I don't need to PAY someone, so I can take THEIR test, so they can tell ME that I know my stuff.

It is kind of like the Mensa society. You get to pay them so they can tell you how smart you are. Sounds like the opposite of intelligent to me.

No, it is for either developer or employer, or both. It proves teh same
thing either way - that you meet a set standard of understanding of teh
technology. Good fo rconfidence, good for marketing (use of logo on business
    cards/site etc)

Still, this particular cert is a dud.

Thanks for your feed back.... I am going to get the cert, because it might open a few more doors for me. The damn job market is so competitive, and those HR people hear about certification and they tend to think it is important.

I just want to prep alittle because I am afraid the test will be filled with questions like "Please explain the osbscure properites on the cfgrid tag... etc...

    Thanks all!!

Like all certifications, certification is not for the developer. It is for the employer. If your employer wants you to have it then great... go get it. But if it is just for a personal trophy then don't bother.

Like all above unless you told by work to get the CF developer certificate, I wouldn't.
Books to read in preparing for the exam -- just about anything by Ben Forta -- I used Web Application and Advanced Application development to learn CF Try these. However, since you have been using CF since 4 there might be something a bit more geared to learning just the new features

this cert is not really given much respect. in my opinion this is due to two
reasons - first, cf just isn't 'critical mass' enough to make this cert one
worth pursuing. second, the exam is ridiculously easy.

for personal reasons, yeah do it. but for career advancment - not worth it.

this discussion ("worth" of the exam) has been had many times over on various mailing lists/forums.

my $0.02 is that it'll never hurt you to have.

that being said, Ben has a CF Cert Prep book that's great. I'd also highly (HIGHLY) recommend the CFMX Exam Buster by Centrasoft ( http://www.centrasoft.com/).

I'd say if you've armed yourself with those 2 tools, you have given yourself every advantage possible.

I agree with Dan. I did the CF6 exam more for personal benefit at the time, it wasn't needed for my job and I certainly have no need to do the CF7 exam even though I use it every day. If it's likely to get you a job then I'd suggest doing it.
