Consuming Webservices - XMLAttributes and XMLChildren

I am consuming a webservice that the elements contain values for either XMLAttributes or XMLChildren, but not both at the same time. Is this a rule or is it possible that it could potentially return both sets of values?

There's no reason a given element couldn't have both attributes and children.
