Edit Windows Hosts file

I am running CF 6.1 locally as my development server. I need to create subdomains (abc.localhost.com) in order to create childsites on my local computer and test variables. I edited the host file last night to include the entries such as
127.0.0.1 abc.localhost.com, etc... After I edited everything worked beautifully.

When I restarted my computer this morning, however, I cannot bring up the CF administrator nor my local CF webpages going through my usual path of : http://localhost:8500/Site/etc...

I changed the Windows host file back to the way it was and still no luck. I have rebooted (cold boot), stopped and started CF services, etc. but still can't bring up these pages. I get a 404 error as if it cannot find the web page. I can ping localhost and it resolves to 127.0.0.1 and visa versa.

Does anyone know how to get the CF server back or if the path to the files may have been inadvertently changed when the host file was edited?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!!

    Hi,
    Why are using port 8500 in your url? Are you using JRun web server or external web server like IIS to access your applications? Please make sure that you have cfm pages in Coldfusion-home/wwwroot if you are indeed using JRun web server. Usually any problem with DNS should give you Internal server error rather then the 404. I think your issue is not with the hosts file. Something else is causing the problem.

    Interestingly enough, when I came in this morning everything was up and running again. None of us here are sure exactly why, however.

    Just so you'll know, I run the port 8500 which is how you access files when you use the CFMX built-in webserver.

    The ColdFusion MX built-in web server runs on port 8500. And, even though you may configure the application server to run on another web server, for example Microsoft IIS, ColdFusion port 8500 is still active by default. Port 8500 will also be the first port that's checked when a request is made because the path is automatically cached on the server. All of this creates unnecessary server overhead and security risks. The ColdFusion MX 6.1 installer automatically disables the built-in web server and disables pathname caching when installing on multihomed IIS web servers.
