In Place Upgrade from Coldfusion 2018 to 2023

Is it possible to do an in place upgrade of Coldfusiton 2018 to 2023?  Keep it on the same server and just update the version of coldfusion?  If we install it on the system and have both versions of Coldfusion on the server, how do we reconfigure it so it uses the correct version?  Can we uninstall the old version once the new version is installed?

    Correct answer Charlie Arehart

    Briefly:

    1) no

    2) by using the wsconfig tool to connect your web server to whichever you want running your code

    3) yes...but don't remove it until some weeks after all seems well

I could say a lot more, and I have in presentations (carehart.org/presentations), but you may prefer this succinct answer.

Some more points, in addition to Charlie's answer.

There is one main reason why you cannot do an in-place upgrade from Coldfusiton 2018 to 2023. The reason is that many of the technologies integrated in ColdFusion 2018 are completely different from those currently in ColdFusion 2023.

Yes, you may install  ColdFusion 2018 and ColdFusion 2023 on the same server. But you have to treat them as two separate applications.

And in case it needs to be said for some readers, this fact is not in any way unique to cf2023. It's ALWAYS been the case that there is no in-place upgrade of CF.
