Question

Is ColdFusionDying?

The development team that spent 3 years building our CF application informed us that there last CF developer left the company and that they are having problems finding CF developers. We didn't see this coming because 3 years ago they told us that they had 7 CF developers. We had no idea they were down to one!

Our business is in serious jeapardy right now because we've been without a developer for 3 months now. Should we shoot the horse and start over with a different technology, or are we just faced with one man's perspective on the state of CF developers. Any help would be appreciated. We've got to come up with a new CF development team like YESTERDAY. (smile)

Good new is, there's a whole lot of CF Users in NC...

Here's a link to the Adobe site's listing of NC CF User's groups.

http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/usergroups/search_results.cfm?findType=1&country_id=D6D8274E-1954-4FEA-87FD8F85B651B29A&state_id=C52CCAB7-780C-49FF-A4C3243999F4457F

I doubt if your previous development company though you'd com up with this
info... Shame on them. :-)

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replys. We are located in Cary, NC. We are certainly open to remote developers. We haven't used a local developer in years. What I am understanding is that all of the experienced CF developers out there don't have the bandwidth to take on new projects.

We really want to stay away from individual developers because there seems to be little accountabilty with them. They could get in the middle of our project and just decide they don't want to do it anymore... We've been down that path already also.

At this point we don't care where the developer is, we just need someone that is experienced and won't break our current application and leave us hanging. I will check out the links that were provided to see if we can find a firm to support us.

Thanks

While there are definitely many CF developers out here, I am not so sure
there are 'more than enough to go around.' I think there is currently
more demand for us then there are bodies to fill the seats. I know we
had some difficulty finding anybody for our CF positions who had more
experience then "I played with it once in college".

In the end we got a experienced PL/SQL developer with the attitude "It's
a programming language, give me a good syntax reference and I can figure
out the rest".

I suspect your development team is making excuses. I have a hard time believing there is a shortage of ColdFusion developers or developers who can learn CF. ColdFusion is easy to learn and a programmer experienced in another language or platform such as Java, .NET, or PHP should be able to pickup ColdFusion easily.

In working with several web development and hosting companies in my city I've noticed that the majority use ColdFusion (along side PHP and/or ASP.NET). You might try contacting web development companies in your area to find developers to contract work to.

Some other resources for finding ColdFusion Developers:

There's plenty of CF developers / development houses out there. Not as
many as - say - C# or PHP, but more than enough to go around.

It sounds to me lke the company you've been usng thusfar might be a bit
gormless. Or simply wantng to move away from CF and not being honest with
you about that. That's two reasons for ditching them, anyway.

Is remote development and maintenance acceptable? If not, where are you located?
