JDBC driver problems with SQL Server

We have encountered an error which we have tracked back to the Progress JDBC driver for SQL Server.  This Progress KB post describes the error exactly:

https://community.progress.com/s/article/exception-thrown-when-retrieving-multiple-large-result-sets-using-sql-server-jdbc-driver-6-0

The timing, along with Charlie Arehart's presentation (https://www.carehart.org/presentations/Hidden%20gems%20in%20CF2021.pdf - see slide 38) indicates that the 6.0.0.000367 release is probably what we have.  (If someone can tell us how to find the actual version number... please pile on)

The progress article indicates that the problem is resolved in  6.0.0.000381 (or later).  We can't download this directly from Progress without a Progress login, so... how do we get the updated driver?

This might be a dumb question, but you can use Microsoft's own free SQL Server JDBC driver. Have you tried Microsoft's driver, or is there some specific feature that only the Progress driver supports? You should also be able to open the appropriate JAR file, and I think in this case it's probably still called macromedia_drivers.jar (!). That will have all of the Progress (previously DataDirect I guess) drivers in it, and you should be able to find the one you want to see. Finally, you should be able to open a ticket with Adobe to find out the current Progress version and see if they can provide an update. This used to be a BIG DEAL back in the early Macromedia CF 6+ days, because these drivers had all kinds of problems. Eventually most of them got worked out. But if you're having a problem now, you should report it to Adobe, and they should either provide you with a one-off replacement driver if possible or get an official patch from Progress and incorporate that into the JAR file from Adobe.

Not a dumb question at all, but something we would prefer to avoid - we have code to create data sources using the drivers available with the ACF install, and would prefer to avoid the mess that happens when people have to grub around with other drivers - it can be done, but we'd rather not.

I remember the grand old days with the (seemed like weekly) DataDirect driver updates... thank you (??) for stirring that up. 😆
