mssql2k5 connection to cf9

hello- need help establishing a connection from my ms "sqlexpress" instance in cf9 administrator (note: using windows 7 if that matters).  I cannot create the datasource and continually get an error stating that the instance is not running.  I verfied that all sql services are enabled, naming conventions are correct, tcip is enabled, ports seem correct... not sure what i'm missing.  I am experienced in setting up mssql->cf connectivity and i've checked all my previous pitfalls, i'm stumped.
