Hello everyone,

I'm a first semester CF guy and this is new to me so please bear with me.  I need to build a mini app that will perform simple to moderate calculations for a larger app I am building. I want my user to be able to go to a form and pick a conversion type, enter a number and and get a result based on what he/she enters.  For example, say it's 72 degrees Fahrenheit.  User pops in 72 and gets a result in Celsius.  I know how to create a form and the variable for it.  I even have the conversion formulas.  I can get the result to the action page, but that's where I get stuck.  How do I take the data that my user has inputted and multiply it by my formula and spit out the result at the same time?  I want to try to make it as lean as possible and I know it can be done a lot easier than some of the full-blow apps that I have seen out there that do the same type thing on a much grander scale.  Just need something quick and dirty.  Any takers?

I offered to help you, but not write it for you.  And, to be honest, you don't need CF for this.  You can do it in pure HTML and JavaScript or jQuery.  If you have the conversion calculations, it's easy-peasy, even for you.

Now, if there is a reason for needing to do it in ColdFusion, such as you are storing the results in a database (can't imagine why), or something, then it's still easy-peasy.  CF arithmetic is the same as it is in JavaScript (ie, form.fieldValue * x is the value multiplied by x.)

These forums are primarily for users to help someone troubleshoot code that they have written and can't see what's causing an issue.  Users here typically do not write the whole app for someone.  Otherwise, these forums would be inundated with students trying to get a passing grade without any effort.  Is that why you're not writing code and putting it here for us to help with?  Are you a student trying to pass a class and don't want to put in the effort, or don't think you're at a level that can keep up?

If that's the case, then apply yourself to your task and don't cheat.  That's unfair not only to the other students, but more unfair to yourself.

If that's not the case, then please explain why you are not posting code that you've written and need help understanding.  There are a lot of people, here, who are more than willing to assist.  I count myself among them.

    V/r,
