Question about custom set up for either ColdFusion Builder or Dreamweaver

Hello

I know I'm living in the past here- Macromedia Homesite- what an amazing IDE in its day.

Not easy to replace.

I've tried many times to use Dreamweaver but never got it to just show a simple uncluttered interface like MMH. Just edit & browse- resource tab on the left showing the webroot and the cfm files split screen. Supposed to be able to choose what browser to use but that ability went south with the acceleration of browser technology. In MMH, one can choose Netscape!

Drag & drop table & column names once a DB connection is established. Simple.

I have no idea if Builder can be set up this way. It would be great if someone has succeeded in setting up any CF IDE like this?

Thanks! see below

    Correct answer Dave Watts

You've said you can connect to your production SQL Server from your local workstation via SSMS. Is this correct? Yes

If so, can you create a connection in your local copy of CF that connects to your production SQL Server?

Yes if you mean are my db's registered & connected in my local CF admin (see attached).

If so, can you use RDS to connect to your LOCAL copy of CF from your RDS client, and by doing that connect to your production SQL Server? Don't know exactly to what you are referring?

In both Dreamweaver & before that Homesite, the resource tab has a data connection via RDS but fails when I use the same login credentials & port as SSMS.

I never have & will never develop CF pages on a remote server. I just want the convenience of dragging/dropping table /column names into my CF queries. I think the discussionshere got sidetracked a little here- sorry to all if I was not clear about my original intent.

Connect from Homesite to your local CF server. Use the RDS tab in Homesite to see what databases your CF server can connect to. DON'T USE THE SAME CONNECTION INFO YOU'RE USING IN SSMS! Just use your CF server to connect for you.

@seasonedweb , I have followed the discussion. I want to zoom in on ColdFusion Builder, because your question mentions it. In so doing, I may be repeating a point you've all mulled over. Are you willing to backtrack a bit?

The answer to your question is: yes, you can achieve that database functionality with ColdFusion Builder! In fact, I do believe Builder does what you want better than Homesite.

The version I am thinking of is ColdFusion Builder 2018 (v3.2.x). Just install it on your local machine and, when you do, enable RDS. The rest follows from there.

I have attached a picture showing RDS in use in ColdFusion Builder 2018.

I too have resisted the migration from HomeSite/ColdFusion Studio for many years until it really stoped working on Windows.

The only IDE that I manage to get along after the death of HomeSite is Sublime Text 3. It has some plugins that can be very helpfull and is a very smoth running IDE and doesn´t hog machine resources.

Vinicius, sublime is one alternative and there are others, some even with various levels of cfml support. I list more here :

    You've raised a few issues.

First, neither DW nor CFB support the split display of folder names in one pane and its files in another, from my experience. They both (like the highly regarded VScode) fall into the camp of having only one pane for files AND folders. I lament that also.I 'm not aware if any of them can be modified to change that. It is possible. Let's see if anyone may have an idea.

As for selecting browsers, that notion of loading browsers within the editor has really gone away. Most open a file in an external browser, or load your default browser if support is offered to open inside the browser.

And often people wanted DW to render their html processing live in a browser, while typing (wysiwyg) . That too is a notion given up long ago. Some folks still want it, but they should no longer expect it. (And with CF and other web app languages, it was even more challenging long ago to render that wysiwyg.)

Finally, as for getting sql to be generated (drag and drop tables/cols, and still much more) within either DW or CFB, that does work...but it's predicated on having an rds connection properly setup between the ide and the server. I've been helping people do that for a couple of decades (back to hs+ and cf studio which also leveraged rds for certain features). I won't elaborate setting up rds in the editors and on cf, as that's covered in the docs and other resources that I and others have created in the past.

If you're just asking if the two IDEs CAN let you drag and drop tables/cols/etc, that answer is yes. If you want to get it working and can't with the docs, either share what you may trip over here for us to help with, or I can help you get it setup in perhaps less than 15 mins via remote screenshare consulting.

Let us know if the above addresses what you asked about.

OK  "I can help you get it setup in perhaps less than 15 mins via remote screenshare consulting."

Should be easy with MM HS as I was connected for years then unable to connect to my remote SQL Server for the last 8.

I still use WS_FTP 95- never had an issue since 1998- I like simple.

I like simple, too. And as I said, solving it in a screenshare together may be simple. Solving it here in the forums may be complicated, as there are many moving parts in the ide and in cf. Still, the sentence before that you quoted said, "share what you may trip over here for us to help with".
