Should Coldfusion become open source?

From my research, (doing Google searches with the words PHP vs Coldfusion) the most important reason for using PHP instead of Coldfusion is the cost of Coldfusion. The second most prevalent seems to be that PHP is more flexible (also more complicated). Anyway, If Adobe where to make Coldfusion free, does anyone else believe, as I do, that Coldfusion would have a huge resurgence? Possibly even competing with ASP.net as far as number of users? If the answer is yes, send emails to Adobe asking them to do this, before Coldfusion fades even more.

"Open source" and "free" are not the same thing. Which of the two did you
mean? I suspect you really just mean "free".

Also bear in mind there are already free CFML implementations out there:
Smith and Railo are two. Smith is also open source.

Just my opinion, but I'd suggest putting yourself in a position where it doesn't matter what happens to CF in the future. Hone your coding skills and gain an understanding of other technologies (maybe you already have), so that if you have to work with something other than CF, you can do so with some fluency.

I mean, make your voice heard to Adobe, certainly...but ultimately, they'll do with CF what they want to do.

Just recently started doing that with PHP, MySQL, and ASP.Net. Have even started looking at Java and c++ again.

One other way to make money would be to sell professional services like on site consulting or support. I purchased support when coldFusion was with Macromedia and I was trying to get it to work in a cluster environment. We spent about as much on support as we did on coldFusion itself. I know for myself I get asked more and more by those I work for why we are not going with ASP.net since we run Win 2003 ent servers. I want to see coldFusion continue to grow and gain market share, I just wonder how it can compete in the future.

There is more to Coldfusion, than Coldfusion, you have the tools that are used to write the applications. Making money from the tools, perhaps would make more money, than they make from the server software, if they suddenly had a 50 fold increase in users, and its staying around would probably be guaranteed. You need to look at the whole picture. I don't have those numbers, does anyone in software sales have any idea if you could make more money selling the tools (with a significant increase in users)?

This is probably true, probably as true as Adobe wouldn't make any money and wouldn't give a damn ;-)
How about asking for free beer from Buweiser? This sur would make a huge resurgence ;-)
