speeding access to my pictures

I presume that actual images are stored typically somewhere under My Pictures in win8. Opening up the organizer takes forever and I wish to speed this up. So I ordered a solid state USB 3.0 external drive. Do I just simply move my catalog over there and leave all else alone?
