Stress Testing

I have an application running in a server but before releasing it to he clients I want to test the server and see how many connections are available before the server goes down.
Does anybody know how can I test the server, simulating multiple connections at the same time? I think this is called stress testing.

    JMeter is a nice tool but when you think also usability I think there are some issues. Same thing applies for OpenSTA (opensta.org).

    I've been using Apache JMeter for a few years now, and it's quite powerful and flexible. I've found that it is very good at generating traffic that is very close to the timing and behaviors of real concurrent users.

    Be warned that there is a bit of a learning curve, JMeter isn't something you can install and figure out in ~5 minutes - it does take some time to learn and get used to. But once you've learned how to use it, it's a very powerful utility. Read more about it here:
