Question

Upgrade to MX/7

We had Studio 5 running on an old server. In June we upgraded to a new server and purchased the upgrade version of MX/7. We installed MX/7 on that server without first installing Studio 5. Our developers created our application in ColdFusion 5. We upgraded because the developers told us we had to (and we could not find ColdFusion 5's source).

Subsequently the developers copied all of wwwroot from the Studio 5 server to the MX/7 server. The applicaiton is failing with a license error. They now tell us we bought the wrong version of MX/7 - we should have purchased the full copy because the upgrade requires Studio 5 to be installed. It was our belief that the only difference between the full copy and the upgrade was the license code. Futhermore, the developer are claiming that there is no ColdFusion (IDE - Not Application) upgrade from Studio 5 to MX/7.

Are they correct? Is there a difference in code between the upgrade and full version? Did I need to load Studio 5 before installing MX/7?
Thanks for any help.

Rich

Thank you so much for your help.

I absolutely appreciate it. We will call Adobe to return the release we purchased and re-purchase a full version.

Thanks

Looks like you cannot really upgrade from cf5 to cfmx 7. You have to get the full version

Please read details on the link below.
http://www.adobe.com/products/coldfusion/productinfo/product_editions/#s3

If your looking at cfmx7 , whether you own cf5 and are upgrading or whether you own nothing and are buying the full package there is no difference in the cost. I am copy-pasting the relevant text.

You Own You Want Your Price
Nothing CfMX 7 Std (Full) $1,299/2 CPUs
CFMX7 Ent (Full) $5,999/2 CPUs
ColdFusion Server 4.5 or 5.0
CfMX 7 Std (Full) $1,299/2 CPUs
CFMX7 Ent (Full) $5,999/2 CPUs

So that kills the first issue. Your CF5 license doesnt really matter. You might as well buy the full package.

My suggestion would be to download the trial/developer version of cfmx7 and see if everything works and gets set up the way you want, then buy the licensed version

Thank you so much for your response. We are hosting ColdFusion on our server. When I said we could not find the source, I meant the physical disks were lost before the new server was installed. We were able to retrieve the Studio 5's License key from the old server to use for the upgrade to MX/7 Standard Edtion.

Please correct me if I am wrong - MX/7 Standard Edition will work on our server with the upgrade license and without first installing Studio 5. Additionally, when Adobe says there is no upgrade path, they are not talking about the MX/7 ColdFusion software but are talking of possible depricated tags from 5 to 7 client developed application code. As a practical matter for us, we don't have to purchase an additional MX/7 product. To move from Studio 5 to MX/7 the developers will have to review their code and (manually) change all deprecated tags. Am I stating this correctly?

Thank you so much for your help,
Rich

Yes, it will work, and it would be a full install, not an upgrade ( I think)

>>>Additionally, when Adobe says there is no upgrade path,
I think they mean that you cannot upgrade from cf5 to cfmx7

Yes, the deprecated tags will have to be removed and replaced with the new ones. But there are a lot of new features that would simply large blocks of code you may have been using earlier. Whether to stay with cf5 or move to cfmx 7 depends on how large a site you have and whether you need it, if you're making improvements, changes etc.
Again my suggestion would be to get the developer version of cfmx7 and try it out before buying the licensed version.

Hope this helps

Some tags of cf 5 are deprecated in cf mx7 and obviously a number of new features are introduced.
There are a lot of web hosts who provide cf 5 support, so if you application was working alright in cf5 finding a hosting service shouldn't have been a problem. If you are hosting your own server, could you please expand on " we could not find coldfusion 5's source".
Cf mx7 is available as an enterprise of developer version. The developed edition is for development purposes only and is free. The enterprise edition is licensed and if you have, I think more than 2 cpu's on your server, you need a different license. You might want to check the Adobe website for details.

As far as the code goes, some cf5 tags are deprecated and not available in cfmx7.
You definitely don't need to install studio5 or cf 5 to install cfmx7.
