Question

Will CF7 Ent Run on IIS6 and SQL Server 2005?

We are currently using CF5 Ent., IIS 5 and SQL Server 2000 with no problems. Want to upgrade to CF7 Ent, but need to know if it will work on Windows 2003 Server and specifically IIS 6? Also, will CF7 Ent. work OK with SQL Server 2005?

The CF7 Requirements web page at: http://www.adobe.com/products/coldfusion/productinfo/systemreqs/
doesn't say anything under "SUPPORTED APPLICATION SERVERS" about IIS 6. Also, it doesn't mention anything about database software. My concern is, will the SQL Server drivers in CF7, support databases/tables in SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition? Because if not, we'll have to stay with SQL Server 2000, or maybe there are updated drivers for CF7 that support SQL Server 2005?

Thanks for any help/advice, as we need to get all the software purchased ASAP, but don't want to buy anything that's not going to work. Thanks again.

Gary1, you should be able to run ColdFusion MX 7 in your environment (Win2k3/SQL Server 2005) just fine. I would recommend upgrading to latest DataDirect drivers ( http://www.adobe.com/go/42dcb10a).
When we say that we support SQL Server 2005 as far as SQL Server 2000 functionality, what we mean is that we have not tested new functionalities of the product with ColdFusion 7, so we cannot guarantee that it will work fine. However, in majority of the cases it will, in fact, work without any problems. The second point is that if it does not work, then there is not much help we can provide to you as the support because we are only claiming support as of 2000 features. So, there is a small risk for you, but most likely you will be able to utilize all new functionality without losing in performance or anything else.

Thanks for the info. That link to the DataDirect drivers doesn't work. I did a search on Adobe's site, and found version 3.4 and 3.5, but couldn't tell which was the latest version. Looks like that one ODBC file isn't needed for CF 7? But I copied it anyway.

I updated the driver to 3.5, on one of the CF 7 development PC's. Re-started CF/re-booted. Can't really tell any difference, so have no idea if version 3.5 is the latest, and if it provides any benefits for SQL Server 2000 SP3, which is what we're using now. The README stuff seemed to indicate it did have some benefits for SQL 2000. So we'll see.

However, based on all the feedback, I'm not sure we'll "pay the price" for SQL Server 2005 right now, until we're fairly certain it is a "supported" CF7 (or CF8) product. Otherwise, if we have any problems, Adobe can always say "hey, we don't support SQL Server 2005 and that could be your problem." Thanks again for taking the time to respond. Much appreciated.

We are also running on IIS6, SQL Server 2005 Express with CFMX7.02 on IIS and Windows 2003 Server (5 different installations, works like a charm :-)

Thanks for all the info. We would be using SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition. My biggest question to those of you who said you are using SQL Server 2005 with no problem, is this: When adding your Data Source in CF Administrator, can you select MS SQL Server? In other words, will THAT driver work for all your SQL 2005 databases/tables? Or do you have to update the driver, or select a different DB driver from the drop-down list?

Also, if you noticed on the Complete Support Matrix for CF7, which is located at:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/coldfusion/productinfo/systemreqs/fp_frameset.html
it indicates it supports SQL Server 2005, but only as far as SQL Server 2000 functionality. Is this TRUE? I mean, can you not take advantage of all the new SQL features of SQL Server 2005? Will the SQL code, that is unique and new to version 2005, RUN OK on CF7's <CFQUERY>'s?

Thanks for the information. This is very important to making our purchase decision. Thank you very much.

We are quite happily running CF 7 Enterprise on Win 2003 Servers with
IIS6. We use Oracle, so I can not say about SQL server 2005. But I
would not be too worried about a Win DB working on a Win OS and CF
should have no trouble with it.

You do have to be aware of 2003's new security mantra, lock down
everything until told otherwise. So even port 80 will be closed and
deny Internet connections until you tell the new Win 2003 firewall to
open it. You just need to be aware of all resources and connections
your applications may need and make sure the Win 2003 security is
    allowing them.

Thanks for the info and advice. I did find a "Complete CF7 Systems Support Matrix" at:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/coldfusion/productinfo/systemreqs/fp_frameset.html

and it indicated that CF7 was supported. However, it made no mention of SQL Server 2005. It did indicate SQL Server 2003 "with SQL Server 2000 Functionality Only". However, there is no such version of SQL Server. Microsoft only made 2000 and 2005. I've verified this on MDSN forums and MS web sites.

Anyone using SQL Server 2005 successfully? My concern is the OLE-DB drivers that ship with CF7 Ent. and whether, when adding a Data Source using SQL Server 2005, the driver will work. Appreciate hearing from anyone who might be using SQL Server 2005 successfully. Thank you.
