How to convert these colours to PMS

Sorry for the total NEWB question but I can't seem to Google my way through this problem.

I have these three colour codes and I am trying to convert them to Coated PMS.  I am not sure what the source format is (is it hex, rgb? can you tell just by the codes?) and how do I get the coated PMS for these colours?

The code 003924 is hexadecimal, for R=00h, G=39h, B=24h.

Using hexcode means nothing or sRGB. Purists may say: nothing.

Choose sRGB as working space.

Open Color Picker.

Type bottom center at #: 003924

Choose Color Library: Pantone+Solid Coated

Read: Pantone 3435C

Read Lab: L=26, a=-22, b=6

So far for Photoshop CS6.

Pantone colors are slightly changing over the years.

Also, the Pantone's Coated ink swatches are a solid ink reference for print. The swatch colors are custom mixed inks that are intended to run on a separate printing plate, and because the system has a limited number of defined swatches, it's unlikely you would find an exact match for a random RGB color.

You could go the other way and find an RGB match for a given Pantone color.

The Pantone libraries installed in the AdobeCC print apps now define all of the Solid Ink colors with Lab values, so you could use the color picker or Convert to Profile... to convert the swatch Lab value into any RGB color space. If you use the color picker the RGB destination space is the assigned profile of the frontmost document, or if there are no documents open the Color Settings' RGB Working space is used.

Rob,

that's correct – just the nearest Pantone swatch is found. The swatch doesn't "match"

the RGB color.

This doc contains many swatches with manufacturer's Names or Numbers and then

sRGB, aRGB and Lab-values in a parallel representation.

Each set of the two RGBs and Lab is consistent andmatches the appearance on a

calibrated monitor (if in-gamut).

The relation to manufacturer's swatches is nowadays outdated, but the catalog may

help the OP to become familiar with the stuff, including the out-of-gamut problem.
